Do I have the right to be mad??
Ok here is the background story. I am upgrading the brakes on my car so I decided to go with a slotted rotor upgrade from brakeperformance.com.
So first things first I search the website and come across these rotors pictured here:
So I purchase the ones that have the silver rotor with black hub and black slots. Now if you look at the picture it says "black" in parenthesis. Which I though meant because of the black hub and slots. Well boy was I wrong!! When my boxes came this is what I got from them:
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?? AN ALL BLACK ROTOR?? I know it says (black) in the picture, but if you are selling an all black rotor why the hell do you have a picture of a silver one with black hub and slots??? Show a picture of an all black rotor!!
Now to top this all off, I got a call on Wednesday from a guy named Jimmy saying that another rotor package was shipped to my house along with my order because the part numbers were so similar. Ok, because I am an honest person, I will send them back to the company because mistakes do happen, but now I have to send back all of the rotors because of their false advertising picture. If I would have known they were going to come in all black, I would have never ordered those and wasted my time and went straight with the all silver ones. I'm hoping when I call them on Monday (because they are closed Saturday and Sunday, go figure) they plan on taking something off my bill to rectify this situation because now I have to wait even longer for my brake setup and do all this extra running around in order to ship the rotors back because of their mistake!!
EDIT: Just thought about something.....does the black surface of the rotor go away after the brakes are applied which then causes the rotors to look silver with black slots? If so I still feel like the picture is misleading.

I'm almost certain the black surface will rub off once installed and the brakes are applied. Companies usually paint it all black then the brakes rub off the used part. It makes for a cleaner look anyway because only the part that gets swiped by the brakes turn silver and the rest remains black.

Ok cool, I was just so taken back when I seen them as I have never come across a black rotor like that and was like WTF, lol? I just wish on the site or even next to the picture it would have said something about the way they come when they are shipped out, to avoid any confusion. Thanks for the feedback guys!!

Yeah a lot of new rotors come with some type of coating on the face to keep them from developing surface rust before they are installed on a vehicle. As soon as you install it the pads will rub this coating off.

I still have to call the company on Monday about the other person's order they sent me by mistake, so I will check to and see how much of the black will be removed after braking. If they say it won't look like how it does in the picture I posted above straight from their website, I will return them for the all silver ones.

Funny you say that, because if the rotors were meant to be this way, I kinda wonder how they would have looked when they were on. I painted my calipers black, but it's the G2 caliper paint so the calipers have a gloss to them and the rotors are dull, so I don't think it would look right. Plus I think if the rotor stayed black it would show too much dirt.

You should be glad not mad. Its just a protective coating, as others have stated. The brake pad will break thru that the first time you significantly brake, as you would when bedding the pads. Nothing to be concerned about.

I can't remember the part numbers off hand, just go to brakeperformance.com and on the left hand side type in your vehicle info and they will be on the list with other rotors for the TL. I think the part number was 40061 though.

The pics that were posted are from another members car with EBC Rotors. He was just showing how that black coating comes off after applying the brakes. Mine have yet to be installed. I have to call them today about how they want me to send back the wrong part they sent me from someone else's order so I'll ask about this black coating and what it is actually there for.

When I buy rotors from DRT (design rotor technology) there is the option to have them powdercoated (stronger than paint) to protect the hat, slots, and vanes from rust for an extra fee. I always opt to have it done but when I pick up the rotors they cut the face again on the lathe to get the powdercoat off. Perhaps because paint is easier to rub off they don't bother with the last step and just let the brake pads take care of it.

After calling the company, they are having UPS come to my house to pick up the extra rotors sent with my order so I don't have to do anything. As far as the black coating goes, I was told that it's a zinc coating that will come off (as stated before) when the brakes are applied over a few stops.

I had the cross-drilled with black zinc coating from brakeperformance.com and I actually wish that the pad surface stayed black, looked really cool actually. The pad contact surface will rub off within the first minute of driving, so don't be concerned.
Just be glad.

I painted mine all black like this and when I braked the main brake area cleared back to silver..

That's how that reads, right? Isn't that extremely unhealthy for his pads? I woud imagine the black material they used to coat the OPs rotors are some kind of special material, right?

Yeah I can't imagine spray paint or any kind of paint used to spray the entire surface of the rotor to be a good thing for the brake pads or rotors themselves. The rotors I bought have a zinc coating on them from the factory.
