its called a black box
If they can hook up to it, they can see your maximum speed you ever drove, the rpms, even if you hit the brakes before the airbags deployed.
I'm sure it keeps track of speeds, rpms as you drive, it saves max/min

I'll ask my salesman next time I see him, too make sure.

i'm more worried about insurance purposes, they can check the speed at which you had the accident, see if the brakes were applied. So basically your car can prove you wrong if you BS your claim. It can be used against you, and personally that's invading my privacy. But then again it can also backup your claim too. So its a catch 22 situation

As I recall, at this point, it's mostly American cars that have them. I think all new GM cars have them. Don't think a lot of the imports have them

Invasion of privacy or not I think the courts have ruled that the blackbox info can be used against you in case of accidents.

I thought the black box only retains the last 20 seconds or so of the driving conditions and saves that info if you have an accident. I don't think it keeps everything you ever did in memory.

There are no "right of privacy" applications to driving a weapon (oh, ah I mean your car) down the highway. Therefore, no "rights" are being violated. Don't you guys remember, driving is a "PRIVLAGE" not a RIGHT. Also, the black boxes only record the final few seconds in most cases. A few higher end cars can record more (like the Benz, BMW, etc) to help them with warranty claims (say a weeks worth of info). All of this information is not (currently) real time but in the near future, the mfg's will be able to access your information (while under power) ala the Diags on the newer caddys...
