DMV and Document Fees!

My local Acura dealership in NJ charges the following fees:

Documentation Fee: $152
DMV Fee: $246

These prices seem a little high to me. I just have a few quick questions.

1. How much is the Documentation Fee normally? Can you get out of paying this fee? If so, how would you go about doing so?
2. What does the DMV Fee cover? Just title and registration? If so, this fee should only be $84 in NJ (http://www.state.nj.us/mvc/Vehicle/Fees.htm; the 2007 Acura TL w/ Navigation System should be in Weight Class 8).

Thanks a lot in advance! I'll appreciate any input.

As far as I know the doc fee varies from dealer to dealer. IMHO $152 isn't as bad as others I have heard- sounds average. You will get reimbursed for the portion of title fees that were unused. The dealership usually takes more $$ initially to make sure to cover the costs and then you will get the remaining monies.

Doesn't the $84 listed here (http://www.state.nj.us/mvc/Vehicle/Fees.htm) cover the DMV Fee for four years because MVC implemented the Four-Year Accelerated Registration Program on October 1, 2004, requiring all owners of new passenger vehicles to pay the registration fee in full for the four-year period?

"The "document fees" or "dealer fees" are total bullshit, a scam, and discretionary to the dealer. IOW, he makes them up to boost his profit after he has quoted you a price.

Many dealers have it printed right on the order form. If presented to me, I cross them off. I flat refuse to pay this extortion. It's not an Acura thing. Most car dealers in big cities try it.

You will get the excuse from the salesman: "If I bought a car here, even I would have to pay it."

Bullshit.

Just tell them to take it off, or, at least, to add the same amount on to the discount so that it goes away. If they tell you the law requires it (it does NOT), ask to see the law. This is a pet peeve of mine.

They will almost never disclose this fee during negotiations and wait until the last minute to pop it on you as if it's normal and everyone pays it. Everyone doesn't.

So, during negotiations, I suggest you tell them that you want ALL quoted prices to INCLUDE any dealer of document fees."

I guess the Document Fee questions are answered. Thanks guys! Now how about the DMV Fee questions? Does the DMV Fee only include the title and registration fees? If so, I think I should be only paying $84 according to the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission (http://www.state.nj.us/mvc/Vehicle/Fees.htm).

The DMV should be a 3rd party fee and be exact. If you have doubts to the validity of the amount, ask the dealer to itemize the amount and then call the DMV and ask them what the fees are. If they truly are about a third of what they claim, I would be tempted to walk away from that dealer. That's bordering on a scam IMO.

What's included in the DMV Fee? Is it just title and registration? I know you get plates when you register your vehicle so you probably don't pay extra for them. I also know about the tire tax. What else is included in the DMV Fee?

$150 doc fee is kinda high. $40-50 is fairly normal though. Of course you can typically have it removed if you complain.

Some states have laws in regards to doc fees. For example (thank goodeness) the doc fee limit in the state of California is $45 I think. In other states, there are no such laws so some dealers will go as high as $399 doc fee, which is outrageous. But once you get up from the table, you will see those doc fees magically disappear.

The $8 tire fee is pretty bogus too but oh well...what can you do? I ain't gonna go mad crazy over $8.

Now the Tax is in-freakin-sane! I got charged over 8% here in California. My TL-S tax was $3,000.
