DIY oil change, do u use an additive?

i bought my '05 used and while looking at the dealership receipts from the previous owner, i noticed that the dealer charges a few dollars here and there for additives when they do service. i never noticed in any of the diy oil change threads that anyone used them. when i was at autozone, there was this little demo thingy with gears and a handle that u could rotate to show that when there was an additive the oil reached the gears stacked on the top a whole lot better than with no additive.

do u guys use anything? if so what? the demo thing was pretty effective in showing that it added higher viscosity (i think that's the term) to the oil.

As a reader of the "Oil Forum", I have read that it is commonly agreed upon by everyone on the forum that addivitives should *NOT* be used.

For further research, here is the link to an excellant oil forum.

I had my car in recently for service and noticed "MOI" on the bill. I asked the service manager what that was and he said it was Motor Oil Additive. I complained and showed him my owners manual (2006) where it clearly says not to put any additives in the engine. He then OK'd a new free oil change so I came back in a few days for the change. I use Mobil 1 5-20 weight.

Good for you! What your dealer did was to try another method to squeeze an additional nickel out of the customer and for something that is potentially harmful to your car. They should be ashamed. The only additive that my car gets is a shot of Techron in the gas tank every 5000 miles.
