I'm expecting to change the oil in my '05 Acura TL soon and would like to be prepared. Does anyone know the oil bolt size? I'm assume it's a metric bolt. Thanks.

Go to the 3G Garage, hit CTRL+F, type in "change", and you will find it.

I found it and added it to the 3G Garage. I hope it's the one you are looking for.

Here's a hint when searching for 3 letter words. Put a * after the word, like oil* and it will find it for you.

I recently changed the oil in my '04 TL and now I have a leak around the oil plug. I did read in the manual that the seal does need to be changed because it is a one time use seal. Like many on this forum, I never had to change the seal on my Toyota, so did not figure I had to do it on my TL. Well, I was wrong. Now the question is, do I wait until I need to change the oil again and keep wiping up the oil spots, or do I get a new seal and change the oil again. Any thoughts? I will keep checking the oil level in the mean time.

Did you just get this 04TL and is this the first time you changed the oil in it? It's possible the previous owner never changed the gasket and that is your problem, or it could have had the wrong gasket. Or is this just the first time you neglected to change the gasket?

I have changed my own oil in my 04TL for over 3 years now, and change the gasket every 3d time and have never had a problem, and many others do the same thing.

It's true it is cheap, but if it hasn't been abused by overtightening some of us feel it isn't absolutely necessary to change it each time, so let's lighten up on the noob and welcome him to the forum instead of attacking him in his first post.

It depends on how much is leaking, how you drive, and how comfortable you would feel on a long trip, whether you should change the gasket now or wait until the next oil change.

Easy big guy. I am not that cheap. I would gladly replace the seal if I thought it was truly required. I paid way too much for this car to let a small thing like a seal be my achille's heel.

As I and as others have said, I have not had to replace the seal in the past and thought this was same situation.

Thanks, Ron.

I did just get this car and this is the first time I changed the oil. I think from now on, just as a matter of practice, I will replace the seal. It gets old cleaning up the oil from the garage floor. Not alot, but enough.

You ideally should have a pan big enough to catch the shootig oil stream, AND the drips that drip straight down from the drain hole while the oil is shooting out. This will require a pan about 18 inches long. My thing didn't come close. What a mess.

Also, I picked up the oil filters at Acura, and they came with a new drain plug washer taped to the top, which was cool. Original washer looked fine, though.
I know this is an old post, but a friend who is a mechanic suggested to loosen the drain plug until it is almost out, then put it at an angle so the oil can drain past. You can do this so it stays in by itself, then leave and do something else for 15 minutes. This'll prevent the oil from shooting out and making a mess. Then you come back, remove the plug completely and let it drain the remaining oil.

I hate oil leaks of any kind and I have plenty of them in my classic British sports cars. While a few drops on the garage floor are a nuisance, your engine is not under pressure while parked. When driving, there is a certain amount of pressure in the pan (but not the same pressure in the oil system) that causes it to leak at a bit higher rate. Where does that oil go? Not just on the pavement, but all over the underside of the car. Not pretty, a dirt magnet and a pain to clean up. I use a new washer every time!

Looking for input on what I need to buy to get set up. No detail is too small, because I'm starting this from scratch. So far, I can think of:

- 5 quarts Mobil 1 0W-30W;
- Oil Filter (I'll search other posts to find out which one);
- Gasket for the oil plug (from Acura);
- Ramps (I'm doing this in my driveway, and recs on which ones to get?)
- Filter wrench (suggestions on which wrench to get?)
- Something to put the used oil into.

I have access to Target, R&S Strauss and PepBoys. No Wal-Mart nearby.

Thanks for any and all help !
The filter and choices you make depend on your approach and opinion on filter & oil brands. I have had my TL since new. It has about 15,000 miles on it now and I love it. I have an Excel spreadsheet I use to track the maintenance. I perform the oil changes myself and use the info. below to assist me each time I change the oil:

Misc. Information: Use 17mm socket for oil bolt. Crush Washer for oil bolt (part # ACC9410914000). FRAM Extra Guard PH7317 oil filter (Use small size filter wrench with handle for oil filter). Washers are ~35¢ each.
Procedure for resetting oil reset indicator in 2005 Acura TL
1. Go to oil life in multifunction/trip computer.
2. Hold down Select/Reset for 10 seconds (until the Service Indicator comes up in Orange), then let go.
3. Hold down Select/Reset for ANOTHER 10 seconds (until it brings up the Reset <OK> notification), and let go again.
4. Then Press the Select/Reset a final time (just normally) and it will reset oil life to 100%.
NOTE that if you press one of the arrow buttons after the first time, it will turn on the "Service Notification A" (and associated "message waiting" indicator)

I have no issue using Fram oil filters. I get them from Walmart for about $3.50 each. I also purchase my air filters at Walmart along with the oil. I don't believe in the propaganda about oil brands. As long as the oil if certified and a name brand. I have even used Walmart's brand of oil. I like getting the oil in a single large container. Good luck on changing the oil.

Yep, they are the same. Current Acura part number is 15400-PLM-A02, made by Fram ( ). There are better filters - Mobil1, Honda S2000 (15400-PCX-004), etc.

Search "PCX-004" or "PLM-A02" for much Oil Filter discussion.

Don't forget to apply the handbrake and chock the rear wheels for added safety. Your other choice would be to use jack stands. Ramps are quicker, though.

Sounds great, never saw those before, will work great on our low cars.
