disappointed to say the least.....

Hi everyone,

To start I have a 2005 tl w/nav that I purchased 2 years ago. I absolutely love the car and baby it to death. In the past few months though it has been costing me quite a bit though. I recently had the motor mounts replaced, along with both drive shafts. I got the car back last week only to discover that the power steering fluid was leaking. Come to find out that now I need a new power steering rack with all taxes and labour is around $1700. I'm starting to really wonder what's next to go. This is really costing me quite a bit as you can imagine. I really don't want to get rid of this car but I'm not sure if I can keep repairing it. Have any of you had this many things go wrong with it. Anyways just looking for any advice/opinions. Thanks

How many miles are on it? Do you keep up with routine maintenance? Did you buy it used?

Sell it to a dealer as is and don't tell them anything or trade the car in to a dealer. I personally can never sell a "bad" car to a private party without telling them all the bads but have no issue doing that to a dealer. Take your lose now before more money is involved.

Well I've got an 05 TL, and after doing a regular rear brake job (standard maintenance) the rear wheels sometimes squeak. I used ceramics, wonder if that has anythin to do with it.

However that is the only problem I've had.

unfortunate to hear op. maybe ask for some goodwill from which ever dealer you're going to? that or trade it in. there are some bad ones out there - previous owners didn't maintain the cars, or beat the heck out of them. all my problems on my previous tl were...self inflicted. gl!

Hey guys, car has 96000K (56000 miles), and yes it is regularly maintained. I am considering options at this point but am not in a financial position to get another car. I hate the idea of getting into a car payment, this one is paid off. Something to think about though.

They had a service bulletin on the power steering hose. I would look into that.

I have a 2007 nbp tl with 53000 miles on it, engine was making noise around the passenger side of the engine bay i figured it was a pulley since i could see the tensioner or idler pulley(sorry im a noob)moving left and right just a bit. Took the car to a honda dealer they determined it was the power steering pump. They took it to an acura dealer which said it was the power steering pump and theyd replace it as a goodwill? they would pay 75% for the part and the labor so i would only have to pay $90. The car haf the power steering hose replaced due to the tsb. Im taking the car in tomorrow to get the part replaced so i will let you guys know how it goes. Since this is my first post i think it would only be right to thank you guys and this site for providing me with knowledge and diys for these vehicles i really appreciate it , i did my firs brake job on my tl with the diys which werevery helpful. Thanks and sorry for this long post

my girlfriend just dropped $3k in her 05 TL including a new power steering pump (2nd one). She is now at 130k miles and the dash has just cracked..... smh. But the car runs like butter, and she has no thoughts of getting rid of it. So if you ask me, it was worth every penny.

Well to update, I did get a re-manufactured power steering rack and had it installed, car definately drives like new. It was a bit of a hit on the wallet but it came out a lot cheaper then sourcing parts through Honda/Acura. The wife and I hope this is it (touch wood) for any major disasters, we love the car too much to give it up. Besides the alternative would've been a CR-V (wifes choice).....yah enough said...Thanks for the advice/comments...

OP - i noticed that you said you had to replace the axles and the motor mounts...what were the symptoms that you were experiencing that led you to the replacment of these parts. Research on this forum indicates that these are the parts others have replaced in an attempt to resolve the driveline vibrations...just curious if this is also why you did and if so, did it help/resolve the vibrations?

VQPower37 - is that 105k miles? I hope it is!! i have approx 97,000KM (~60,000miles) on it as of now.

asmcbride - yes i had both axles and motor mounts replaced, they basically told me they were worn, I started to get the *tick tick tick* when making a hard turn, when the first side was fixed, the other side started to go as well. Acura did replace the cv boots under warranty but did tell me if they started to go again they would need to replace the drive shaft/axle... as luck would have it, i had to replace the drive shaft on my civic as well!! Damn its been an expensive few months!!

How much was the remanufactured rack?

I just brought my car in for new dash and new tires with power steering noise. I replaced the gasket as noted in another post, that took care of the morning time whine, but now the dealer tells me I need a whole new rack because it's cracked/leaking. They told me $1700 ... looking at how much other options would be.

Had a strange smell coming from the car. Couldn't figure what it was after I checked the oil and tranny fluids. While betting new tires put on 3 weeks later, the service guy checked my power steering fluid and said it need to be replaced. That was where the strange smell was coming from. Maybe the fluid was being cooked or something.

I am sorry to hear you are having so many issues with your TL. I was going to say you dont have to go to a dealer to have the rack replaced. you would pay half that anywhere else! My rack went out in my MDX at ~70k. I did it myself and it cost me 180.00 in parts!
Good luck in the future, just remember you dont always need to go to the dealer, and reman parts are ALWAYS a good cost savings!

the crv boots are major weak points for all cars. if you dont inspect regularly and they crack and leak you will hear the clicking when turning and this can lead to axle replacements. this is esp important in winter conditions when theres a lot of salt and chemicals. get underbody washes regularly
