Diesel?
Diesel?
I read that in '09 Honda will be offering diesel versions of their SUVs. I was wondering if anyone knew if they would be doing the same for the TL/RL/etc. It seems they have a very clean and efficient diesel engine, and this technology would make a nice fuel-efficient car.
I know that new diesel cars will be allowed in CA by '09.

I'm an old Diesel nerd... I sold my crazy tricked 2002 Volkswagen Bora conversion (German Jetta) TDI (turbo-charged direct injected) diesel. That thing laid down 250+ ft-lbs of torque AND got 50mpg. Scroll down to see pics.

It doesn't seem so special now, as all cars seem to come with the features I had to retrofit into the VW. 6 speed, Nav, none of that stuff came with the car. Too bad VW's are always plagued with some issue.
Enough of my nostalgia.
To answer your question, no idea what Honda plans to do, but it makes sense.
Diesels are very common in Europe, where fuel is nearly double the costs, so folks buy for fuel effeciency. Problem is, US diesel fuel standards are so low, that our crappy fuel would destroy the VERY expensive fuel pumps of the European Diesel.
2009 marks the mandated Ultra Low Sulfer Diesel standard, where our fuel by law meets the European standard for emmissions... This means we should see an influx fo european diesels. You can already see it buidling... VW and Mercedes both are offering numerous Diesel offerings, now GM is bringing them in with the Liberty.
Diesel rule. Raw torque. With a littel chip and boost tuning you can't keep the front tires stuck tot he ground. I hope Honda brings Diesel to the US, but I imagine that will relegated to the Ridgleline/Odyssey/Pilot line. I doubt you'll see a Diesel in a Honda sport/luxury... ever.

thats disappointing if they'd never put a diesel into one of their cars. It seems it would go well with AWD. Plus Honda has all that new clean diesel tech. Seems they'd want to capitalize on their investment.
No joke...
Honda's had Diesel Accords for sale in the UK since 2004:

and they're fast too.
A new chip and bigger fuel injectors and that bitch would fly!
