Angry deer god

yup...i hate PA in the worste way possible. driving to work saturday night around 930 pm, im on a dark 2 lane road and out of nowhere a deer comes flying across the street, i locked them up but sure enough i hit it pretty good. normally when people hit deer they come up on the hood/windshield, but not in this case, when i locked my brakes up, i hit the deer right before i came to a complete stop, so my car basically punched this deer 10 ft in the air, 15-20 feet in front of me and about 15 feet to the side of the road on some lady's front lawn. i saw the deer trying to get up and run and it couldnt and died soon after (they're over populated in this area anyway).

Damage to my car is pretty rough, i hit the deer directly in the middle of my front bumper/grill...damages include:
1: buckled hood
2: smashed grill
3: cracked bumper
4: dented passenger side fender (i assume from bambi's head)
5: shattered passenger side headlight housing (not the lense tho, wierd)

i'll post pics later tonight or tomorrow, but for the mean time with the description i gave, what do you think the damage is??

That is my worst fear too. That's why I don't speed on the back roads like I could. Cops I could care less about, it's those damn deer.

Sorry to hear about this, it always scares me driving in Colo. since there are so many deer around here. One question though: You say you "locked them up". How can you do that with ABS brakes?

I've seen so many deer around Pittsburgh in the last month. The only thing you can do is watch for that tiny pink glint when the headlight light gets reflected in their eyes and hit the breaks.

There are also those deer whistles, but there doesn't seem to be a good place to put them on the TL. You'd think they'd be integrating those into cars by now.

How can you lock your brakes? We have ABS, it prevents it from locking by doing constant pumping. I have been in some pretty crazy situations, dry and wet, always getting the shaking feeling on the brake pedal.

Anyways, it's good you are ok, too bad your car isnt.

They work, but you have to be careful; if you install them backwards then you have hundreds of deer following you all over the place...

Sorry, I've been waiting to use that for a looonnngg time.

Yep, in my parts, if you hit a deer its yours free of charge and regardless of season. I think the OP needs to whack a whole herd of them now to recoup the cost of the car repair. Just put on some temporary bars at the front of the car to minimize further damage, and wear a helmet just in case, and then go lurk at deer crossings.

Lots of them here, but nothing like in parts of Pennsylvania. My brother spent a summer working near Preston Park, PA, which is way up in the northeast corner of the state, and he said that there are so many deer there that you quickly become adept, when you see a deer up ahead, in turning off your lights and blasting the horn without slowing down. Apparently the horn scares off the deer and turning off the lights is needed to avoid causing the deer to freeze.

Sounds like this wouldn't have helped the OP because the deer ran out suddenly. That almost happened to my family once when I was a kid, except it was a moose that ran across the road and he was perhaps one car length in front of us. Don't think I've ever seen my father come so close to crapping his pants.

haha, that's about 5 minutes from me. and he is right, there are TONS of deer. I'm so afraid I will hit one some morning going to work. did he work at one of the camps?

honking the horn works well in scaring the deer off into the woods

He did indeed, but I have no idea which one. This was back in the summer of 1995 (I remember the year because I got my Acura Legend that summer and also our grandmother died).

Angry update

i have pics of my car on my computer if someone wants me to email them and they can post them for me (im a retard and pretty busy at work)

anyway, my car went into the shop on tuesday morning, after taking the bumber off and hood and all of that, he found that my radiator support/tie bar/radiator and AC condensor were all damaged also...the insurance adjuster STILL hasnt made her way out to verify all of this damage from that piece of shit deer that i hit he is saying best case scenario i will have my car back by next friday...not happy

what is nice is that he will be painting my grill (everything except for the A) black, the two strips on the lower grill black, the silver strip across my trunk black and all of my rear emblems debadged and painted black as well (if i ever want to put them back on the car)

since i got the car in April, i have taken very good care of the car, clayed/waxed/polished every 4-5 weeks...do you think there should be any problem blending the paint?? thanks

That is entirely dependent on the competency of your bodyshop.

Whenever I have had to have bodywork done, I always tell them that I expect that there will be no overspray (including doorjambs and under the hood), that the paint finish will match the factory finish in both color and texture. I expect all joints to be uniform and no bodywork/sanding or swirl marks will be visible and that Acura replacement parts will be used.

Good luck, hope everything meets your expectations. These things are never fun.

Yeah make sure when you pick it up, you give it a real close look! Especially around the ends of the body panels like hood, fenders, headlights, so that there is no paint runoff! And what 1075 says

Damn man...sorry to hear that. Even though it's a bitch it coulda been way worse like you said (ie the deer rolling up on the hood and possibly the windshield). Hopefully you get a good deal on the repairs...good luck

Oh.. you beat me to it..lol..

Hit a moose before at 2AM.. 2 lane.. real dangerous b/c of all the drunks on the road. Took 30-45 mins before police & vet could get out and put the poor guy down who was alive & crippled in the middle of the road while we tried flagging down motorist to slow down..

Well.. Hopefully the little guy is in Deer Heaven and be thankful that you are okay. You should have sold the Venison to pay for the damage (Waste Not Want Not). My buddy hit a whitetail with his suburban going 40mph.. hit brakes so probably tagged it around 30mph.. total front end damage (A/C, Radiator, Bumper, Grill, Hood, both fenders).
