Debating between TL and G35...

I love this message board. Is there a similar (i.e. good) message board for Infiniti products as well? Thanks in advance.

Zomba I was debating the two cars also. I test drove the G35 after the TL and the ride in the G35 is much stiffer. I felt the acceleration in the TL 6MT was better. The G35 awd was very tempting but with simialr options it was about $2,000 more.
I have settled on the TL and hope Acura service will live up to it's rep.

I read that Infiniti is coming out with a new M35/M45. Also, Lexus is coming out with an all new GS in 2005.

I have no doubt that the TL will be the value leader of this group, but the new models from both Lexus and Infiniti will be tempting.

I am looking to buy in early 2005.

I also test drove both the G35 and TL, and bought the TL for a couple of reasons:

+ Liked the exterior styling of the TL much, much better
+ Felt the G35s interior was 2nd rate (sorry)
+ Liked the DVD and Bluetooth features
+ TL was approximately $4k cheaper
+ G35 6MT was not available locally for two months and the dealers were not that willing to deal on it
+ Like the G35 RWD setup, and do feel some torque steer in the TL, but I don't take it to the track. Wish the TL came in AWD

My previous two cars were Infinitis and have had good luck with them, so you cannot go wrong with either.

I have not had too many of the rattles listed on the board but I do have the tire vibration issue. Have not had a good experience with Honda/Acura customer service response to this issue, which has surprised me. My dealer came through for me and said they will switch out the tires next week.

A couple of interesting points since you're not planning to buy until early '05. First, the (in my opinion) lackluster interior on the G35 is, according to very reliable sources, being replaced in the '05 model with a very high quality interior. The new interior should be first shown at the NY Auto Show in April Second, Grubb's Infiniti in Dallas, TX often offers VPP pricing to members of the FreshAlloy forum on G35s. In case you're not familiar with it, VPP pricing is generally only available to companies that have strategic relationships with Nissan/Infiniti. It is a pre-negotiated price that is generally 2.5% over invoice. Grubb's will ship cars to anywhere in the contiguous US, though being in St. Louis, a flight/drive to Dallas wouldn't be out of the question either.

So I'm not recommending the G35 over the TL because they're very different cars, each with their own superior qualities, but since you're planning to wait until '05 to buy, I thought you might want all the available info to help make a decision.

I felt the G35 coupe was better performance-wise, but the TL had a better overall package. The G35 was fun to drive but the interior, although nice to look at, felt cheap when I touched it. Plus, it was also $3000 more.

G35 Coupe is a terrific car to drive. I'm very interested to see the interior improvements for the next model year.

Yeah, I am, too. But I also heard that the changes are going to cause the price to go up about $1500 to $2000.

i'm with this guy on this matter...but then again...when you talk about over all package.....the TL is still the best....i love my cousing g35 coupe but the feel of the TL is just much better IMO....more luxury and with the right amount of sport....you just get the best of both worlds.....

A buddy of mine has a G35 and the other day he got in my TL for the first time. He looked around for about a minute..I didn't say a word...and he just sighed and said "this is unbelievable...this car is so much nicer than my Infiniti...I gotta get this car"

I don't care if Infiniti is re-designing the interior on the G35. Its still going to look like the other Infinities, and in my opinion they all look pretty strange. The M45 is the only exception, and even that car has a strange dash layout.

Agree, especially when it comes to the styling department. The G35c smokes the TL there. The G35 sedan is ugly though....

That said... it really depends what you're looking for. If you want a car that handles a little better (stock) and is more of a driver's car while offering some luxury.... go G35/G35c.

If you want a bigger car with nice power, sweet interior and some extra bells and whistles (DVD sound system, Bluetooth, etc) then go with the TL.

It all depends what your needs are....

TL is greatest when looked at as a whole package. It has great power, economy, resale, interior, navi, reliable, etc.

Haha. Yep. G35 coupe is too small inside. The back seats are useless. I couldn't even sit straight up in the back and I'm only 5'8".

Basically i wrote that because the TL is very different than the G35c (I never compare cars with different #s of doors) and if someone wants 4 doors, they must prefer a TL right? If someone prefer's 2 doors, they should not be looking at the TL. Nobody should "settle" for something they want less in a car. Either way, I'd probably cross shop 330ci, 350Z, S2000, RX8s with the G35 coupe.. not the TL.

Zomba,

The 2005 G35 sedan and coupe will get a major interior overhaul as well as standard "aero-like" kits. There will be no horsepower changes (although Infiniti can pull something out of its ass in the last second.)

The 2006 M35/M45, due out in spring 2005, will be shown at the NY auto show next month. It probably won't be that different from the Fuga.

I really like the looks of the Fuga. Second best looking sedan of all time, after the current generation S-class imo.

I'm confused by a couple of responses. I see that the G35 is $2,000 - 4,000 more than the TL. My G35 sedan listed for about 33,xxx (don't remember exactly). I think it has everything a TL has except Bluetooth and DVD-A. Where are you guy's getting this price difference? Are you comparing the TL 4door to a G35 2 door? What am I missing here?

BTW, I am not trying to convince Zomba what to buy, just clarifying the facts. I think either are excellent choices, and it comes down to personal preference more than one being "better" than the other.

When I came within a hair of buying a G35 coupe non-navi w/6spd and premium package it was $34950. Got the TL w/6 spd. non-navi for $31980.

My final choices, before purchasing the TL, were the Lexus ES330 and the G35 sedan (auto). All three had similar performance and interior/trunk size. This is predicated on a 35K pricepoint.

Each had its good points, but the TL prevailed and I am not sorry I made the choice. I eliminated the G35 due to problems addressed in their forum, ie brakes that had to be replaced at 10K mile. Since then Infiniti has made good on the brake issue but I suspect after the warrantee period is over G35 owners will be paying for brakes every year. Take a look at a G35s front wheels and you will see a very high level of brake dust . This indicates rapid wear. In addition, the interior is subpar. It reminds me of the interior of a 12k Toyota from the 80's. The infiniti also has an issue with the drivers seat. The controls are on the right upper side of the seat. G35 owners complain of leg pain caused by pressure from a support brace that holds the seat controls that is part of the seat bolster.

This left the Lexus as the only viable competition. It didn't make the cut because to equip it in the same manner as the TL would result in a price 3K above the TL. Another factor is it looks very much like the other 10 million Camry's on the road. I wasn't looking for a "Peoples" car.

I found it very difficult to make a decision at first but resorted to a kind of assessment rating 1-10 for each variable like style, reliability, power, handling, value, interior, interior space, features, resale etc. I then assigned (based on what's important to me) a weighted value for each variable based on 100 total points for all variables. I then multiplied the values times the ratings for all variables and the sum of these divided by the number of variables resulted in a quantifiable number to compare all cars.

I know this is rather lengthy, subjective and anal but I am an engineer. What can I say????

The results confirmed that the TL is in fact the car to get. Surprisingly, the second place car was the 300M. This is the car I was replacing. It fared well because of its interior/trunk space as well as a highly reduced price (last year of production). This was followed by the Lexus and then the G35. Your result may vary.

I heard <$1K. I'm seriously considering an '05 coupe 6MT so this is of particular interest to me. I'm keeping my eye on all the available info as it's released. If this thread (or another like it) is still active when the details are available, I'll update it.

I totally agree with you. The TL is a great value, but equally so is the G35. I'm not sure where these $2000-$4000 differences are coming from.

The street prices of a non-Navi TL seem to be about $31,000. The street prices of a similarly equipped G35 sedan are about $31,000 - $31,500.

It seems to be a favorite pastime of TL owners to slam the G35 sedan on looks.

Maybe it's just a few posters repeating the same thing over and over again.

Actually I like the way the G35 sedan looks, but I like the TL more. But I think the G35 coupe looks better than the TL, it's just the coupe's cabin is too small, especially the rear.

I sold a 2004 G35C for my TL.
The G felt like a rocket compared to the TL. I am sure it was all because of the 270 lbs. of torque. Also, the G felt like it was GLUED to the road, and I have driven many of the same routes in the TL, and it has had noticably worse handling. To me, the G was a very nice sports car, and the TL is a very sporty nice car. They are meant for different purposes, IMO. The TL is much quieter that the G ever was, and more refined, although the G was faster and had more secure handling. Go test drive them back to back and compare notes.

~Z

P.S. There is a lot of G-bashing on these boards, but I am still willing to admit that sometimes I miss my Black on Black G35 Coupe 6mt...

Adam,
The weird thing about the G sedan, IMO, is that sometimes it looks sweet, and then other times it looks nasty. Maybe its the difference between seeing it from the front, compared with seeing it from the back.

That's interesting, since I like the G's back end, but am not that big a fan of the front.

The body kit will be standard on the 2005 G35 sedan and couple, although it won't be the same as the aero kit they're offering now.
