Dealer Wants My Car
Dealer Wants My Car
What's up guys! Hey I need your help. My dealers has called me 5 times in the last week. By voice and voice mail begging me...literally BEGGING me to buy my car! It is a 07 carbon bronze pearl Type S with ASPEC wheels Navi and ONLY 48K on it. Currently based on KBB the car is worth about 6K MORE than I even owe on it. She is trying to get me into a 2013 TL SH-AWD or she has even offered me cash. She said they liege rally have none in inventory and about 12 looking for them. Mine being the pick of the litter because of the miles and condition. I REALLY love my car! But I'm interested in the advances of a new version like the 6-speed stick, the AWD (I live in CT) and the tech upgrades. Guys, it seems like I'm sitting on a mini gold mine with this TL and I'm not sure i really know how valuable it is. Would this new Acura be just as valuable or should I sit on what I have?!
Sit on the one you have. The 4G didn't sell nowhere near as well as the 3G. They'll buy your car, then jack up the price and resell it. You'll have a 2013 TL that wouldn't even be worth the prestige as the Type-S. The 4G's design language is a little radical. I like it to an extent, but I'd take a 3G well maintain TL/S over a 4G anyday. KEEP IT.
I get letters in the mail asking me to trade my TL and my old TSX and I haven't owned either in over two years. I finally called the dealers and told them to stop asking as I sold both cars a long time ago. I say keep your car I used to have the same and I miss it. Besides calls like that are usually high pressure trade in specialists they may claim to give you a really good deal on your car but trust me the dealer is in it to make money and while there maybe demand for used Type-S's right now people are still only going to pay so much for a used car and your trade value is going to be based off that. If you really want to sell then sell it yourself and you'll get more for it if there really is 12 people in your area looking for a car like yours.
That's just another dealers tactics to get your business. They all say that exact same thing. Good thing no dealers know I have a 08 CBP Type S with half the mileage of yours, otherwise apparently they would all "beg to have it" lol. For what it's worth though a 2013 Advance SH-AWD is a damn nice car, but it's just not the best body style IMO. The Type S may be somewhat far behind it technologically, but the Type S has looks to die for!!!

I get letters like that also, especially right after I take mine in for service. Although, its beginning to slow down now that my miles are going up. Hey, it cant hurt to go in and see what they might offer you. The Type-S is an awesome car but for the right price I would jump into a new one.
The new TLs have grown on me, but I just don't look at them the way I look at my type s. Before this, I had traded my 05 for an 11 Maxima, loaded. It was basically by all means a better car than what I ultimately traded it for just a year later - my Type S. Problem was, it was just a nice car to me, and nothing more. Didn't have the personality or beauty of the Type S that keeps me looking back at it day after day.

keep it. you wanna get them to stop calling? tell them you love your car and you have no intention of selling anytime soon. unless they wanna give you an obscene amount of money for it, then....
type-s' don't stay on dealer lots for more than 2 weeks. my dealer recently had 2 (one was a member on here) and they were gone in 2 weeks. they have a rare 05 6MT with navi on their lot right now...it' sbeen there for about 10 days...

It's just a sales pitch... I get that from Chevy dealers all the time. "We have a shortage of 2007 Impalas, we want to buy your car" yada yada. I've gotten them for my 96 Caprice that got wrecked years ago too... not yet from Acura lol.
What is the deal here? My 08 TL-S is mint with less miles. You make it sound like they would pay you to take the 4g.
You make it sound like 3G=4G+cash.
The dealers does not give a hoot about personal preference it is all about the dollars so you are not going to see the equation 3G>4G.
As cool as the 3G is it depreciates every single moment driven or not.

OP, keep your car. I get letters in the mail all the time (about every 6-8months). my wife even got one for her 2002 camry about 4 months ago. All dealerships do this to get you into a newer loan term, and they make monies off your Type-S.

EVERYBODY loves your car...MORE than the new ones.
Is there a new car you want more than the car you LOVE? Can you afford it? Once you trade in the car you love, it's gone, gone, gone and you may be wishing you had it back.
Something else to consider---when you have it paid off, would you take $6K for it?? No???? Then the $6K over what you owe that they're offering you is irrelevant. How much MORE would you OWE if you got a new one, and would you be as happy?
Side story: This morning I took the 08 to the hand car wash and was drying it off when a guy with an 02 RSX stopped to chat because he was looking to buy a (sexy) 3G TL and wanted to know all about them.
The 3Gs are VERY desirable, the Type-S even more so, and modded to taste is hard to beat....If you're happy, why mess it up because the dealer's ONLY goal is to make you even happier??
Like 350 said, it's a sales tactic. They need to move inventory so they'll claim your car is in demand hoping you'd sell it to them and finance through them, too.
Call her back and say in Dr Evil's voice that you want a million dollars for it.

Take up their offer and trade it in.
The 2013 lists for @ $43,000 so if they give you a decent price you'll only owe maybe $20,000 and in 3 years the SH-AWD will be worth @ $25000.
If you've got the money go for it.

TL-S FTW. If you want to sell it try to do it privately. You could probably find one of the buyers asking the dealership for it. Most likely you'll get more cash than what the dealer is offering plus the buyer wont pay the jacked up dealer sticker. Win Win
And OP - It is a common sales tactic, but at the same time, the Type S is rare, at least around here. I had called every Acura dealership in Northern Illinois when I was looking for mine. Not a single one had a Type S, well except for one with about 125K on it. The last dealership on the list had one coming in tho from a guy upgrading to a '12 SH-AWD. They called me as soon as it showed up, and it was mine that day. None of the other dealerships that I left my number for ever called me back either - probably because of how fast they sold any Type-S cars that came in.
So in short, you have a rare car that they will sell at a profit in a couple days max probably, and they would be selling you a car that would otherwise take them a couple months to sell probably. Win-win for them, and only a win for you if really want a 4G that badly.
If your car is really that hot you should just sell it privately and take that profit and buy the 2013 if its what you really want. Bottom line is the dealer wants to make money off you and this is just another sales tactic to move inventory.
Acura Guy/Gals are GREAT!
Damn! You guys AWESOME! I didn't know what to do or think. The 3G has been a dream car for me since the day it came out but I was younger and had no money. I was 3K upside down on my TSX before it got totaled and ended up traveling to another state when I found this TypeS! So I'm used to being upside down so when it came to having equity in a car I didn't know if I should get rid of it while somebody still wanted to buy it. But I read every word of everyone's comments and it made so much sense. Even the ppl who suggest trading it in make GREAT points. So when I left for work (ESPN) and took the very hilly roads to campus I imagined not having it and almost though up on myself! Haha. I've gotta call her back and tell her I'm not gonna come up.
Thanks Team Acura

OP...don't think that anyone said this. If you want to get rid of the car, sell it yourself...you would make more than trade in value the dealer will give you. My opinion, keep your Type S.
Wise decision, smokey

Enjoy it!
I would keep the car. I guess I'm sitting on a gold mine with similar logic. My car is worth 15K more than I owe on it and it has only 54k miles.
The 3G TL is still a sweet car. The only car I would consider at the moment is a Tesla Model S Performance but that is quite a bit more $$$.

If they're like Goodson or McDavid, they won't tell you until you make it appear you're genuinely interested.
It took a few e-mails regarding my interest in a TSX V6 to find out that Goodson would offer just above what every other dealer would offer. McDavid though, sent a letter after a couple e-mails stating they'd offer $19.5K based on mileage & model, without seeing the car.
It was a pretty tempting deal a little over a year ago, & if it was still on the table, I'd take it since it'd pay off the car & leave enough for a down payment on something else. But, the car has put on some considerable miles since.

If it sounds too good to be true, it is. The 4G was pretty much a major fail and the dealers know it. For a lot of them used 3Gs are easier to sell and have better profit margins than the new 4Gs.
If they can get an owner with a desirable 3G to trade in for a 4G then they kill 2 birds with one stone. They get a 3G that is a guaranteed quick sell high profit car and they get rid of one of their slow selling 4Gs.
I would say don't do it. Plus the 4G is likely in its last model year too. Why buy something brand new that will be obsolete in a year? Since Honda/Acura seem to have finally pulled their head out of their ass, the replacement will most likely be better, unlike the 3G->4G.

The dealership is still going to get 3G's for next to nothing, same as the 4g's, relatively speaking. That's the game and it's how they make money aside from the service department. The 4G straight up doesn't sell that well, I've talked to Acura sales guys and it's always the same sob story. Given the tech advancements in the 4G, it's arguable that you can get more car for less if you just beat them down on the price of a 4G because they dust them for so little just to move them off the lot (hell even brand new ones - did you see the incentives going on end of 2012? lol).
that said i'd still never give up my 3g. Every time I see a 4g TL I'm thankful i have my type-s.
I agree, this is another pathetic sales technique. These guys will sell their mothers. You will almost always do better (much better) selling your car outright (keeping the most of the markup that the dealer would get) and never trading in. I thought by now that car dealerships would have evolved, but I think they are now worse. No exaggeration, I recently saved $6000 in one transaction compared to a dealers "best offer" by selling and buying privately. Good luck bro.
Who are you using to ship parts?? I'm retired from the biz (used to restore classic Mustangs and buy & sell cars & parts---yeah, I knew Mark---inside joke) but used FEDEX in WK or USPS in New Berlin.
Anyway...nice to know someone close by!!!
