Dealer tells me TL requires synthetic oil.. lol

So when I called and asked Acura of Stockton how much they charge for oil change, and told me $69.95. I was like "Are you kidding me? just for an oil change?" and they said 05~06 TL requires synthetic oil... where in the manual does it say TL requires synthetic oil
sigh...

Save yourself some money and do it yourself. You can pick up a good oil filter for about $4 and 5 quarts of oil for another $10. If you want to go synthetic, you can get a Mobil 1 oil filter or a K&N filter for $10 and the oil for about $25.

Right next to the paragraph were it tells you about all the other "non-required" items the dealer wants to do for an inordinate amount of money....

Ask him if the TL requires synthetic air in the tires also.......

The bad.... You probably would have paid $70 bucks for the oil change and actually received dino oil...

Run away...

I stand corrected. Dealerships cannot perform oil changes for as low as $25 using four quarts of Mobil 1 motor oil. It must be Mobil oil like:

OR

Obviously Jerry doesn't work there anymore. The good news is he's been replaced by Synthetic Jerry, (as required by Acura).

Thats why I dont change the oil myself anymore. $5 more to that from where Im from and the dealer changes it without me having to get dirty. They also check tire pressure and other misc items.

i haven't had an oil change since that last time. if he doesn't work there anymore than i probably will do it myself. i wouldn't want to fork over $70 for a simple oil change.

It would be interesting to find out where 3rd gen TL owners get there oil changed.

a) some dealer (honda/acrua)
b) 3rd party company
c) DIY

also the pros and cons to each.

Acura takes no position as to whether synthetic or conventional oil is to be used.

I am not aware of any reason why you can perform an oil & oil filter change back to dino oil.

Syn/Conventional oil mix is sold today. Going from non-detergent to detergent oil can be a problem.

Synthetic oil offers better and longer lasting protection than dino. What's debatable is by how much. On my ex-Accord, I noticed a mile or 2 better to the gallon and it took a lot longer for the oil to get dirty.

I buy the oil and filter on my own and take it to a local garage I've been doing business with for years who charges me $10. Last change I used a NAPA gold filter and Castrol Syntec 5W-20.

No this is not true whatsoever. You can change from one to the other with no big deal whatsoever. I ususally dont do this, but that basic thing is to change it when it needs it....brands are not as important...especially if you are on the semi-outdated 3000 mile program!
