Dash causing false laser detector alerts

I don't have any problems when the detector is mounted on the windshield but I took it down to adjust the mount and then it started beeping like crazy. Anyone else get a false laser signal from their detectors when you point the detector to the right side of the dash where the passenger climate controls are located?

I thought that maybe it's the Navi screen, but it nothing happens until I move it to the right of the screen. I don't see any LEDs or anything else over these particular buttons, but I can trigger my detector over and over again in the same spot. My guess is that this will happen on other models of detectors also.

I just spent $340 for the top-of-the-line Passport X50 because it's supposed to be one of the top 3 radar detectors out there (please, no debate from V1 or Bel fanatics). All in all, aside from this funny falsing, the detector seems to work great and the blue display is a perfect match for all of the blue lighting in the TL.

Yes, I had the same thing with my V1 detector, in front of the Navi screen it goes nuts. It must be the wave length of the light emitted (does not have to be a laser) and the strength of the light (how close you are to it) that makes it go nuts.

Happened when I got the car a year ago. If installed at the window, it works fine, it is just when you take it down and aim it at the nav screen like you said.

Looks like it happens with more than one brand, I would not worry about it.

Yea, it will happen with the nav, or the clock display... for the few who have the avelectronics unit - the IR from the remote also sets off the laser.

I'm much happier now knowing that this isn't limited to the X50.

I know you don't have your TL anymore but do you remember if the V1 still warned you properly if there was a real LIDAR signal? What I'm worried about is that whatever stray light that the dash is making will somehow interfere with the detector and reduce it's ability to pick up REAL laser signals (not that it will make any difference because a cop with a laser gun will still get you with or without a warning unless you have a jammer).

I never had a Lidar signal durring the time I had the car (nor did I get a speeding ticket durring that time), so I can't help you.

You may want to call Escort and ask them if this is possible, but I would think you should be ok as long as it is mounted on the windshield away from the Nav/clock area.
