D2R VS D2S HID's Question?

My buddy has a 2003 TL and his stock ballast stopped working. So he decided to buy a a whole new HID kit.
Now the problem is that he bought a D2S kit and since he doenst have projector lights I believe he would need D2R right?
Worse case scenario, say he does keep the D2S would he be getting tickets from the cops?

iirc the bulbs can be interchanged no prob
When you buy kaixen or other brand bulbs they are not the same as stock- its that letter differance and the mounting plate having a certain tab or not but, didnt affect the install or use

check with Josh at Excelerate he knows for sure what will be ok
Run matched bulbs left and right so they are the same brightness and color/ amount of use

cops would only care if the lights were misaimed so badly as to cause a hazard to oncoming drivers or were purple in color- thats way beyond legal

Lowered cars need to reset headlights

this car is all stock stock....and he just bought 6000K D2S bulbs...im just wondering if we should be returning these ones and get D2R instead, but prefer to just keep these if its not going to cause any problems.

If he installs the kit he will be fine, however, the D2R bulbs have a shield on the bulb to prevent sporadic light shoot out.. So he may blind some people as he is driving...

But why did he buy a D2S kit? If all he had to do was to purchase D2R or D2C bulbs?

(D2C bulbs all come without a shield, I ran them fine in my 2G TL..so he will be ok)

well cops wouldnt be able to tell if it was d2s or d2r....the d2s has an notch on one side n d2r has a notch on the other...they arent interchangable unless u shave the notch into the bases of the bulbs. you will just get more of a glare if u put the d2s in a d2r fitting...thats what d2c bulbs are, they fit both housings and have a d2s glass sleeve. the d2r bulbs have a shield over the part of the bulb thats got the gases that ignite to prevent glare in a reflector lens.

my gen2 has the half round shield above the bulb- its a seperate small metal piece that screws in place
so as long as the bulb went in with external electrode in same position as original,,

Sorry to bring back a old thread, but for our 3G TL, is it D2S or D2R (discluding D2C)? Just wanted to make sure (thought I was D2S).
