Coronavirus = better gas mileage
Hey 3G TLers, this last week my wife and I took a long planned road trip from central New Hampshire to the central North Carolina; not exactly the best roads for good fuel economy given the need to drive through (and stopping in many of) the metropolitan areas of Boston, Hartford, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, DC, and Richmond. That said, it looks like the virus kept many folks off the roads and helped us get much better than expected fuel economy. In all, we drove 1,700.2 miles; the OBC calculated overall fuel economy of 29.63 mpg while the miles divided by the fuel method yielded a calculation of 29.50 with our best tank between Elkridge, MD and Manchester, NH going over 450 miles and returning nearly 31 mpg. I cannot say I ever imagined I'd be able to drive the full length of the NJ Turnpike up to the GWB and then across the Cross Bronx in broad daylight and get that kind of fuel economy.

The best tank, between MD and home to NH showed an average speed of 67; my typically CC setting was about 76 with a number of sprints up into the 80s and then the slow bits approaching the various bridge and tunnel crossings, and then all of the congestion between the GWB and the Connecticut state line.

My point exactly, I managed to drive from Washington DC to the Manchester, NH area on cruise control virtually the entire distance. I mean, other than a few bridge and toll crossings in the Maryland and Pennsylvania area, and then of course the approach to the GWB and on through the Cross Bronx, I think I was on cruise control the entire way.

The average speed of my TL increased enough so the fuel economy increased by three MPG since the Stay at Home rules were issued by the City and County of Los Angeles.
Traffic on roads and highways is now never close to capacity, but like traffic usually only seen at 7 am on Sundays.

We went to Phoenix and back, left March 15th, returned March 23rd. We didn't realize there were going to be so many shutdowns prior to leaving or we would have postponed the trip. On the way traffic wasn't too bad, on the way back, other than big rigs, traffic was unusually light. So typical mileage heading there, about 1-2 mpg better on the way back. And not just better mileage, other than the $2.85 a gallon (for regular and 70 cents a gallon higher than anywhere else) in Phoenix, gas was otherwise relatively cheap. Currently $1.49 for regular here.
In town on surface streets, doesn't matter, still the same awful traffic timing that has you stopping at every light still going on.

Right before the outbreak my girlfriend and I took our 04 took a trip to Vermont from Ottawa. I drove about 75mph (120kmh) for most of the time and average about 8.5L/100km (27mpg). Filled up with Vpower, and I am on Starfire winters. I can assume I'm doing ok for mileage?
