Confused -- quality between DTS CD and DVD-A

Hi all:

I sat in my friend's TL for a long time these past two days on our trip to and from Tahoe.

I purchased a DTS CD -- The Eagles "Hell Freezes Over" CD and only after buying it and opening it, realized that it was actually a DTS mixed CD, but still a CD.

That said, is the quality on this CD significantly less than the Eagles "Hotel California" DTS-A that apparently is the real deal?

I listened to the DTS mix of this CD in the car and it sounded amazing especially with the discreet channels. Can the DVD-A of this release be that much better?

I'm confused. Did the "DTS mixed CD" have 5.1 discrete sound, or was it stereo?

There is no DVD-A of Hell Freezes Over; the DTS 5.1 CD that you have is the only available media that will play in the TL. It is a true 5.1 mix (6 discrete channels).

There's a DVD-V available, but the TL won't play it. There's also a standard stereo CD.

I own one DTS 5.1 CD, and have heard several others in my car, and they sound very good. Don't worry about if a DVD-A would sound better (it probably would); if the DTS CD sounds amazing to you then just enjoy it for what it is.

It had 5 discreet channels. If you try to play it back on a regular CD player it won't work -- it just emits a high pitched noise.

Very interesting!

I thought that the amount of data required by 5.1 DTS wouldn't allow an entire album to fit on a CD. There's 3x as many channels (6 for DTS, 2 for Stereo), but DTS is a variable bit rate. Hmmm.

I guess you learn something everyday ...

DTS - Pretty Good

I think you will find that DTS 5.1 CD's sound quite good and take advantage of the "surround sound" capability in the car. Try the Police in DTS 5.1, with a compliation of greatest hits, (white cover with small mult-coloured pictures on the cover) - if you like that kind of music.

I have several DTS Discs, and they are all great. Another good one is "ABRAXAS" by Santana. You can learn about DTS at this site. http://dtsentertainment.com/
