Lightbulb CNN news: Honda Recalls 486,000 cars...

Although 3G TL seems not to be on the list, there are already a few 3GTL'rs ever reporting this similar problem (not the key can be removed from ignition without shifting to Park, but the key is stuck on the ignition forever). So, just FYI.

Honda recalls 486,000 cars

Auto maker says keys can be removed from ignitions on some models without shift in 'park' position.

February 2, 2005: 12:23 PM EST

NEW YORK (Reuters) - American Honda Motor Co. said Tuesday it will recall 486,000 Hondas and Acuras to repair ignition switches.

Honda (Research) set the recall to repair ignition switch interlocks, which prevent removal of the ignition key unless the shift lever is placed in the "park" position, the company said in a press release.

Some interlock levers may be improperly dimensioned, the company said, possibly allowing a driver to switch the ignition off and remove the key without putting the shift lever in the "Park" position.

The recall involves automatic transmission equipped vehicles -- manual transmission equipped vehicles aren't affected.

Included in the recall are certain 1999 to 2002 Honda Accord models and all 1997 to 2001 Prelude models as well as some 1999 to 2000 Acura TL sedans.

American Honda, a unit of Japan's Honda Motor Co., will make the repairs free of charge.

Details regarding mailing dates and affected vehicles will be available on the Honda and Acura Web sites Feb. 4, 2005. <--- we will know more details about this...

As for the cases with the key can be freely moved out... I couldn't find them...

Dr. Murdock, thanks for your contribution...

pretty cool. I can do that in my 1986 ford taurus..it freaks people out sometimes when they ride with me haha. I just start driving and I take my keys out of the ignition and I put it back in my pocket LOL. It's hella handy too. Whenever I drop off my lil brother back at home, if he doesn't have a key..all I need to do is take out my key from the ignition without ever turning off or back on the engine.

damn, i misread it. anyways, shouldnt the thing i explained be dangerous as well? The car shouldnt allow me to shift out of park when the key is not in the ignition. I tried it, the car started rolling down my driveway, brakes were locked up, and hand to use the handbrake so i wouldnt roll out into the street.

actually what you are describing is rather dangerous... although it also has its practical applications as well.

I had that prob in my old 98 accord cpe. One day I turn off the engine, and can't get the key out.. so I star the engine again.. go through all the gears, put in park.. turn it off and still the key won't come out..
so I "leaned" on it just a bit.. put some pressure.. broke that lock and ever since then I could take the key out from any gear..

thankfully I was used to using my E-Brake every time I parked.. 'cause there were couple of times when I'd forget to put in park and the car just rolled..

crazy

my 1998 accord allowed me to put the vehicle in any gear without pressing on the brake or even with any key. it allowed me to take the key off while i was driving.

if i had my headlights on and i started the car, i could actually put the key in the off position and still have the car running. the car would not shut off unless i turned the headlights off.

pretty cool feature, there was no way i would ever leave the headlights on and have my battery die...

all this was by accident, i messed with the electronics with the car so much that this just happened...... never on purpose did i want it to do all this.....
