Clear headlights - further discussion
Hello im new here at acurazine and since I bought my 04 TL last november, ive been here alot. I want to start a discussion about clear headlights, specifically about problem of leakage.
I know someone who is a really car junkie since way back in the days, he can pretty much anything. I asked him about doing that and he was really against it because of leaking / resealing. Hes telling me its very very hard to reseal perfectly.
We live in minnesota so there is plenty of rain and snow for a good portion of the year. So maybe he sees that alot. I would love to clear mine, but in the end i rather have ambers over clears all sweaty on the inside.
So what do you guys think about the resealing / leaking problem? high risk? do you think a well reputed place like Abra or LaMettry's would do it and guarentee it?

Clearing the headlights and resealing them is not as big of a deal as your friend is making it out to be. I blacked mine out, first time I ventured into playing with the headlights, and everything has been fine. Find the DIY on the forums and follow that and you will be fine. I purchased some black silicone and put a bead around the whole housing as an added precaution but i dont think that is necessary. If you are that concerned just add the extra bead like I did and make sure that there are no gaps in the silicone and your headlight will be air tight.
Couldn't agree more
I followed the thread and had no problems. i did NOT add any additional silicone, and have had no problems, and we get a LOT of rain & humidity here in MO.
If you are worried, do as others suggest & simply run an extra bead. it looks like shit when you do it, but you can't see it once installed.

The silicone job that I did does not look like shit. I put the silicone right into the gap and smoothed it out with my finger. You can barely tell that I put any extra on, but even if it does wind up looking like shit like said above you won't see it once the headlight is back in the car. There is plenty of silicone form the stock seal on the headlight to seal it up properly, but like I said I added the extra bead for peace of mind.

the first time i attempted mine the drivers headlight fogged up in less than a year. i used black silicone sealant and squeezed it by hand into the grooves of the housing during my first time. the second time (to fix the fogging headlight) i used a caulking gun with black kitchen and tile sealant. it doesn't fog anymore, plus using a caulking gun is way easier method than having to squeeze it out of a tube by using your hands

Also just a thought, do you think this might work? using those smoked film covers like the ones popular with tail lights and getting it cut out so it only tints the amber of the headlights. That might not be a good idea for permanent change but no risks that come with taking the amber off.
yeah i think i am going to try to tint just the sides. Low cost, low risk, not permanent. I am going to try to talk to the sellers of those kits on ebay if they can measure / cut it just for the amber part for some extra money.
