CL 65 AMG vs poor SS truck and WRX.
I borrowed my friend's CL65 AMG for some errands today. I was a little hesitant to take it because the streets are still a little wet in some places and it's a fun car to play in. This one has a tune and it put down well over 500 to the wheels and nearly 800lbs of torque. I'm not sure why there is the big gap between hp and torque other than boost+displacement. It shows there's a lot more left in this engine.
First kill.... There's a guy at work with a WRX STi that always talks crap about my TL. He always wanted to race me in the TL but refused to race the GN. I had the day off but stopped by to take care of a few things. I was really driving around pointlessly most of the day just to enjoy the car. As I was leaving luck was too good. This guy with the STi was pulling out at the same time. I got a redlight with him and he looked over and rolled the window down. He made some comment about the "fake V12 biturbo" badges. I told him to floor it and find out if it was a fake. So he launches about two and a half cars on me. I had traction control off but it seems to somewhat engage just a little. I'm so used to the GN and it's little 6 cylinder spooling a big turbo that I made the mistake of flooring the big V12 to spool the turbos and then backing off like I do with the GN if I don't powerbrake from the start. It rolled about 5 feet and then went sideways smoking the hell out of the tires. These things do not have turbo lag period. I backed out to half throttle but managed to go past the WRX smoking the tires and sideways at 45mph. Once it hooked at 60mph it was aweful. I could've backed out and gone past him harder but it really makes a statement when you go past someone while smoking the tires and sideways. This thing has some serious pull at higher speeds. The way it went past the STi was flat out embarassing. While I know my GN is quicker by quite a bit at 0-100mph I wouldn't take it lightly from 100mph and up. It's amazing to think that it's a luxury car with a warranty and it's this fast. In fact I found one for $35,000 and am considering buying it after today's action.
Then there was a guy harassing me in a Silverado SS. I don't really need to get into the details here. It looked about the same as the WRX except I didn't make the mistake of flooring it until I was around 60mph this time.
I do have to say this particular friend encourages me to drive it hard even when he's with me. He goes through rear tires every 3 months so the little bit of rubber missing isn't a big deal. Otherwise I would never drive someone else's car like this.

If I remember correctly, the torque is limited to 737lbft in stock form because that's the maximum the 5-speed autobox can handle, and that's supposed to be the strongest tranny from Mercedes (stronger than the 7Gtronic).

Nice kills dude and yes I would say buy the won you found. Those are sick cars no doubt. I'm not a fan of Mercedes (my dad is biased and ONLY owns Mercedes) but the AMG series is just down right beast. I was looking into a C32 AMG but went with the RSX-S because right now I make crap money. My next car (if the RSX holds up) will be a 2004 E55 AMG mid to high 20k.

wow, I can't imagine a CL65. My cousin's S600 pulls like a raging bull on steroids.

The Mercedes feels much like a jet at takeoff but much, much stronger. The acceleration is very linear, it seems like it pulls about the same at 100mph as it does at 20mph. It's almost decieving because you don't have the weight transfer and it's a large car. It feels extremely fast, abnormally fast but to really get a feeling for it's real speed you have to watch your surroundings or the speedo. You can be 5 carlengths back from a car and punch it for 2 seconds and you're 5 carlengths in front that quickly. The speedo jumps from 80-120 quicker than the TL goes from 0-30. It's fast enough that you can't tell the difference between a Vette and a Corolla in a race.

In general, when an engine produces much more TQ than it does HP, this is a clear indicator that the engine is producing a hell of a lot of TQ at very low RPM. And, from your description of this car, this is the case

There's a lot of neck strain. He floored it one time when I was looking sideways and not ready and it actually hurt. The sunroof cover flies back and the rear cup holder opens up. The Mercedes is much different than a drag car like my GN. The GN has probably twice as much peak acceleration putting down over 620lbs of torque from 0mph at 3,000lbs but rapidly falling off after the initial launch. By falling off it still pulls harder than the Mercedes by a lot. It's more violent with the large single turbo. There's no power and a second later everything gets blurry, your head spins, the skin on your face pulls back and you can actually feel the seat frame behind the cushion. While the Mercedes leaves people with an OMG feeling, the GN leaves them scared shitless. There are people that will not get in that car for anything.

This happens with any engine when the peak torque occurs well before the peak HP. As the peak TQ RPM more closely matches the RPM of the pk HP, the difference in the numbers becomes smaller.

I'd love to ride in one. I've rode in an E55 AMG and that thing was fast with the SC V8. Twin turbo V12...hmm.
Fastest car I've been in is my cousin's SC 5.0 hatch, which at the time ran 11.30s @121. I haven't been in it since his 10.71 @129.8 And yes, it feels very fast lol.

reminds me of my friend jeff's 03 SL55 AMG with lots of upgrades. He put down over 600WHP and over 700WTQ. Cant remember the exact numbers but they were in that ball park. That car is like a jet liner! Like I hate cars said : "very linear with its power delivery!" Still though the fastest car I have ever driven was my friend jeffs 700+HP toyota supra. That car was like I hate cars grand national! BLURRY FAST!

I know a guy with a twin turbo 5.0 Foxbody, but he hasn't dynoed it or seriously raced it yet. On the track, on street tires IIRC he ran mid-11s.

I don't remember but it's not a whole lot. This one has the boost turned up 5-6 psi over the stock AMG. I don't remember the total but it's low relatively speaking. I want to say 14psi but I'll find out for sure. I was told the turbos are maxed out and to get any more power requires an upgrade. The guy flew a tuner in and he had a hell of a time getting the boost turned up with the car's electronics. Apparently every CL65 uses a different ECM to keep people from messing with them.

One other thing I should mention, for a car with a mile long wheelbase, you have to be quick with the wheel when it gets loose. I eased around a delivery van at about 40mph with traction control off and ended up going pretty sideways. It's not bad once you get used to it but it does require more steering correction when the rear gets loose than you would imagine. Maybe it's the 5,500lbs want to keep on sliding and sliding and sliding.
It is fun to time it just right when people try and race you. I learned to pace people and at 30mph put the pedal down and you're greeted with tire smoke but it still accelerates well. Obviously it's all for show and if I were racing a fast car I wouldn't mess around smoking the tires but the look on people's face when you do a rolling 30mph burnout in a Mercedes is priceless.

That speedo is nuts.. I definitely understand the necessity for the gap down low. Does your buddies car have an electronic governor? Not that going over 155 is ever a necessity..

Off topic but I took a clean CL600 for a test drive today. $37,000 out the door but I think the 65 spoiled it for me. There's just too much of a difference in acceleration. Then there's the girlfriend bringing me back to reality and reminding me that I'm just about to have no car payment anymore. I can't argue with that.

I never thought I would say this but I honestly don't know. I know the regular CL600 has the governor but with my friend driving we went for 160+ on a backroad we saw a spec of a car in the distance and let off around 155 and it turned out to be a cop. At those speeds, even the tiniest movement far into the distance means lifting off the gas. So needless to say we didn't try that anymore. It pulls like a freight train even in the 150s but for all I know we may have been just a couple mph away from the governor.

I wish I could drive a stock 600 and a stock 65 back to back. Unfortunately the only CL65s I have driven have been modified. One was a Brabus version with 704hp and the other was this one with the boost turned up. There is a large difference over the 600 but I don't know how much of that is the aftermarket tuning.
I've never looked up the specs on the 600 but the one we took to the track over a year ago went 12.9@111 with only one pass. It no doubt would've gone mid 12s before the night was over with a few more practice runs. If I had to guess the last CL65 I drove would trap low 120s in the 1/4. It's hard to judge because the car is so large, quiet, and smooth.
