Check Engine Warning and Software Update

Today, After only 800 mi, the check engine light came on, I immediately talked to the dealership and got the car in. When the dealer told me that the problem as reported by the computer was " Engine Misfire on Cylinders 1 and 4" and that the service computer told them to " do not touch vehicle, call engineering". I was ready to start picking out a new car from the lot. Apparently, the remedy for this is a "software update".
I feel like I just purchased the Acura XP ver 1.0. I just hope that this doesn't turn into a windows version where updates are popping up every day.

Has anyone had this problem?

I had the check engine light come on too around 300 kms. Went to the dealership right away. They checked it out but couldn't find anything wrong. 'Rebooted' the computer and everything has been okay since then. Have no idea why that occured but I'm not worried.

I wonder if Acura has a boot disk...I need it for my car. Wipe it clean and start over please.

Haven't had the check light come on me though...with about 3400 miles, but engine vibrates at 50 still

Funny, my car was in the last two days for this, mine was misfire on cylinder 5, techline (engineering) told them ONLY to replace the coil pack first (I guess because only one cylinder misfired???).

Got it back tonight, so far so good.

Interesting they are saying different fixes for different cars.

They actullally told me that at first they started replacing parts in the engines, but that they found out that it's only a software issue.

I guess they figured that out in one day (car was at dealer for last two days, Monday coil pack ordered, today, installed)? Could happen, just like the seat memroy was figured out today.

they replaced all 6 of my coil packs and plugs when I experienced it October 8th and got it into the shop the 13th. That didn't fix it. Neither did clearing and rebooting anything.

After having the car for 6 days, they finally got from engineering to replace the Crank Angle Sensor, and at least that problem has been gone ever since. I don't know if I got any new software.

Maybe they can flash something to improve my mileage.

I spoke with my service department over at Metro Acura in So. Cal and they said that I'm the only one that's had this problem and Honda has not released a fix for it.

Hopefully something official will come out soon because I don't want my car to be a guinia pig.

took it to the service department, i told them i had heard Replacing the crankshaft position sensor helped and about new PCM (engine computer) software....

...they replied that at first they thought it was hardware, but then they figured out it was just software, and all they had to do was delete a misfire code and reprogram the Car with new engine codes.... so i went to school with my dad's car, my dad got a loaner, and later that night we picked up the car again and it seems fine now.

Since I was one of the early birds that they replaced the C.A.S. on, do you think I should go in and get reprogrammed ?? What was the dealer city and name again so I can reference my dumb-ass dealers to them.

Figured I would test this out..

Took the RPMS over 5000 (like 5001) and held it there for a bit...
Check engine light came on... but I held it there a little bit longer so it wouldn't just go away... and sure enough...its stuck there now! woot

err... ok.. maybe that wasn't a good idea as I now get to look at the little yellow engine light all the time.

No big deal as I will just add this to the list along with the memory seating issue.

Called my dealer to see if they had the firmware upgrade to resolve the 5000+ rpm "flag engine light" problem. They told me acura didn' t release a bulletin on it. So I wait.

Motavar, When I picked up my vehicle, the service guy wrote on the ticket "updated ECM software per service bulletin XXXX". I think they are yanking your chair. I will check the warranty invoice to see if it details it there.

Thanks bro!

Maybe this dealership is just clueless.
So far they also told me they don't even have the electrical troubleshooting manual yet.

Well, without any further evidence, I would say the blue screen of death is gone from my car. Today I took it to 6K rpm and held there for 10s. No light. I accelerated briskly and no flashing engine light and the car seem more lively.

Hope this helps everyone.

Mine has the same problem, too, but only happens while driving in high range of RPMs. The initial inspection by the dealer found nothing, and even didn't believe what I saw over this forum. I'm going to convince him of this issue again. Otherwise, I may look for another dealer for the solutions.

Sorry, I hit Enter too fast.

Additional, the dealer also told me that light can be an Advice indicator... so don't worry... the egnine just wants to tell me it's time to shift up... I cannot believe they would say this.

That sounds like a bogus explanatino. I haven't tested it on the TL but I had a Passat with the Tiptronic and the computer autmatically shifted the gears if it got to redline.

TL won't upshift except out of 1st. If you red line, it will apply a throttle limiter. Nothing in manual I remember about the MIL.

whne your dealer tells you its the "advice" whatever then that is bull****, tell them to contact other dealers... you should give them like a 1 on their service survey...

i think the SS might shift up for you.... i was driving along and switched to ss, then i forgot i was in SS, got to a red light, then kept going, then got to another... it wasnt until the 3rd red light did i realise it was still in SS.... maybe it shifts in ss at redline... maybe i dreamt it all???

I would make sure that dealer would only have 1 on their valuation reports. Try to talk to him tomorrow and ask him to call Acura engineers. Thanks guys.

Also, about shifting mode, Acura said:

The transmission will upshift from first to second automatically if the driver doesn't command an upshift in time. In second, third and fourth, the transmission won't upshift without a command from the driver; the ECU cuts off fuel flow to the engine if there is danger of over-revving the engine. The transmission will upshift itself to prevent engine damage in the rare situation where the fuel cutoff alone is unable to prevent further engine over revving (as could happen on a steep downhill). When downshifting, the transmission won't execute a driver-commanded downshift that would send the engine beyond redline in the lower gear. To prevent lugging away from a stop in a high gear, the Sequential SportShift transmission will automatically downshift to first gear as it comes to a stop, even in manual mode.

I did it sometimes, but it never reached the deadline and your transmission wouldn't do anything (shift up) for you under this "safe" situation.

the rotten egg smell comes back only once in awhile for me now, it has gotten less and less as the engine has broken in more... tell me if you dealer does anything about the sulphur smell though... the TL has three 3-stage catalytic converters, so it really shouldnt smell....
