Cheap 04-06 TL Keys!
Just thought some of you might be interested in getting a new or spare sets of keys made. I bought these off of ebay, $14 each, and they worked great.
04-06 TL Key w/ Transponder
I bought two, got both of them cut and programmed at the dealership no problem. They don't come with remotes obviously, but you can buy them for dirt cheap on ebay as well.

LoL my ex use to work at the dealer they'd wash my cars for free for years, no issues with my paint. Shit on Sundays I would show up there and wash the car myself as service was closed.

You're right but it usually doesn't happen like that. Most of the dealers we have discussed on here charge well over $100 for a programmed new key. If you have a dealer that charges less than $80 consider yourself lucky.

I was wondering if anyone ever tried to program the key themselves. I saw some instruction on the net and tempted to do on my own. BTW I just ordered a key and remote from eBay

If you have $7000- $10,000 to spend on the machine to program the immobilizer, it's possible to program the key yourself.

This is the steps I found. Doesn't need 7 Grand tool to do it.
The Acura TL's keyless entry system is user-programmable in 1997 to 2006 models. On 2007 and newer models, the remotes must be programmed at the dealership. A working remote is not necessary to enter the transmitter programming mode, unlike on many other vehicles. Use a genuine Acura key fob for the programming procedure; you'll be unable to match up non-factory transmitters. Each action must be completed within four seconds of the previous action, or the procedure will have to be repeated.
Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Instructions
- Step 1
Insert your key, close the doors and turn your key to "On" (this position is marked "II" on your ignition). Quickly press "Lock" on the remote you want to program, and then turn the ignition to "Lock" (marked "0"). - Step 2
Turn the ignition back to "On." Quickly press "Lock" on the same remote. Turn the ignition to "Lock," and then turn it back to "On." - Step 3
Press "Lock" on the same remote. Turn the ignition to "Lock," and then turn it back to "On." You will hear the doors lock, then unlock. This signals that you are in transmitter programming mode. If the doors don't lock, repeat the entire process, paying close attention to the time between each action. - Step 4
Press "Lock" again on the same remote. You'll hear the door locks engage, then disengage to confirm that the remote is programmed. Press "Lock" on each additional remote you want to program. When you are finished, turn the key to "Lock."

That is the method to program the remote, not the immobilizer.
You asked about the key, not the remote.
Also, yes, the machine required to decipher and program the immobilizer code costs over $7000.
Just in case you didn't know, the key has a chip inside it called an immobilizer.
It's for security purposes.
Say someone cut a key identical to your key. They can open the doors but they can't start the car and drive away.
Without the programmed immobilizer, you cannot start your car.
Hope that sums it up.
Remotes are simple to program and work right off the bat after you buy one (after programming of course).
The remote programming method you posted works, but if you have trouble, your local Acura dealer will do it for free.

Maybe it's different in your area, but most places here in SoCal charge anywhere between $100 - $150 for the key itself, plus programming and cutting. $50 for the key and $50-$100 (most places are $100) for programming and cutting. Then an additional $50-$100 for the remote. It's ridiculous...
