Visual will not pass and emissions might possibly be high depending on your vehicle. The catalytic converter is there to reduce your smog pollutions so if car is running bad, than definiteley it will not pass without the converter there to do it's job.

Why would you want to take it off in the first place? You are not going to get any significant power increase and it's just going to make even more pollution in the air we breathe. Yes, it's only one car and probably won't make any difference but if everyone thought that way, we'd all be coughing from polluted air. Just drive behind a 60's car someday and you'll understand.

You do not have to saw it off and replace it with a straight pipe. There is a system called "ECS" (Electronic Cutout System) for all cars which basically welds in and bypass the cat (sort of like a Y pipe) that goes after your headers but before your catalytic converter.

Your car probably wouldn't run well if at all without the catalytic converter in place.

The various sensors in the car take into account emissions levels and exhaust back-pressure in adjusting various engine parameters. While a "cat-back" exhaust system improves flow enough to be audible and provide a slight power boost, the converter is the bottleneck. Eliminate the bottleneck and various computer aided adjustments would probably fall out of spec.

You can improve your car's performance without hurting the environment or voiding your warranty. Why would you do anything else?

i was wondering because my car has reached 17000 miles. It has 60% oil life. And if i go past 4k rpm there is a sulfur smell. At night when i get out of the car there is a slight sulfur smell. I can only smell it downwind and at a certain spot.

I wonder if my catalytic converter is clogged??? or maybe its malfunctioning. Im going to take it to the dealership sometime within the next 2 weeks.

Also, my fuel economy has gone down teh shitter. When i first got the car it was at 16-17mpg (mostly rural, many stoplights though). After 10000 miles i was getting 18-19mpg, And i drove it fast too. Lead foot and everything. Lately since ive gotten that sulfur smell i have been getting only 16 mpg, even when i drive it like my grandma.

Any thoughts or suggestions?
