Carbon Fiber Hood - Dampers or Hood stay

Curious if any of the other guys with CF hoods are using dampers with their hood or have found an aftermarket solution to the problem of the OE dampers being too strong for the carbon/fiberglass hoods that are available.

I have a VIS CF hood en-route and am trying to sort out a solution other than the obvious wooden stick with rubber feet on the ends to keep the hood open while I'm working on it.

I saw NRG has some dampers made for CF hoods specifically, but wasn't sure if any of them would fit the TL.

So if you've got a CF hood what're you using?

I'd recommend getting the hood prop stick from a tsx or accord and fit it, wouldnt be too hard

yeah the hood prop is a good idea I had a friend with the same scenario but he used the oem hood dampers and his hood started to bent and crack pretty crazy. I would say try to contact NRG and see if they have a set for your TL

What's the weight difference between the hoods? You could probably find the lift struts just rated at less weight. If the hood is half the weight and we have 40 lb struts, try 20 lb struts.

i have a VIS hood and use OEM lifts/dampers and haven't had any issues in 3 years.

the CF hood is lighter (obviously) so you really don't need anything extra unless you just want it.

Cool thanks.

Haha another question - are you guys using aerocatches or any hood pins?

I saw a lot of people using the vis hood said it wasn't necessary.

I'm a little concerned though since I've done a modified version of the UCM and have the open grill in front so airflow under the hood is going to be increased in my situation.

Are you using any pins?

I ordered a set of aerocatches, but could just as easily return them before installing them. I really don't want to run hood pins, but I'd hate it even more if the hood flew up and caused significant damage to my car.

Hood pins are just for show...The oem lock under the hood is more than enough to hold your hood closed.

^ what he said.

By the way, I don't know about all VIS hoods, but when I was installing mine, the lock did not close properly because VIS did not cut a hole for the OEM lock to snatch to. So I had to cut my own. Just a heads up.

feji, he's saying that the VIS CF hoods are like a blank slate on the underbelly of the hood. there is no hole/opening/latch for the hood latch to grab onto...so you have to get creative.

i got mine used, so the hole was already there...but you can tell it was a DIY hack job.

I saw that one, but don't really like the look of it.

Maybe without the vent in the center? I asked about it before I bought the ViS hood and the mesh is replaceable.

I couldn't find any pictures anywhere with it on a car and read a few bad things about Seibon's quality as well which is why I ended up going with the VIS hood.

With mine I decided to use just a single damper, it holds the hood up just fine.

I had two on it and that worked as well.
