Unhappy Car was totalled last night...

Yesterday around 1900 I fell ill and rear ended another car. My blood pressure was low. I'm fine (not a scratch on me) and the other party was fine (God is good). I went to emergency room to be looked at. They figured out a med for my spinal cord injury was causing the low bp episodes. My mom got to the emergency room after my car was picked up. She said the guy thought it was totaled. If this is the def case, where can I get an idea of what to expect ($.$$)? The car only had 53k miles. I'll probably just get a certified pre-owned 4th gen SH-AWD. My dealer has an 09 that's in my budget.

sorry to hear that and glad you are ok. Was this on highway or local street? The med the doc prescribe will prevent any future eps?

Was local street going 35mph. The med was the issue. Not the fix.

So you had existing, known issues of low BP "episodes" yet still chose to drive?

Glad to hear you and the other party are alright. I have no idea how insurance companies figure out a payout for totaled vehicles. I'm guessing blue book values. Will there be an issue with outfitting it with the hand controls or does insurance cover that?

OP sorry about the accident, but I don't think it's a good idea to be on a public forum stating that you caused an accident while under medication of any kind.

Could you imaging if the other party read this...

Sorry to hear, OP. Glad everyone was alright. You can probably get an estimate using KBB, and hopefully you don't have to fight with your insurance too much if they try to give you less.

It was not until he was sent to the emergency room, that this was known what the cause was. Most likely, did not cause issues driving until now.

Glad you and the other party is ok OP.

wrong - you may want to check again. the OP said "episodes" insinuating that there have been occasions aside form this one where something has happened.

just saying.

Not wrong. Understand, many people in this world have low BP problems. Generally not to the point you can not drive, or at least you know when it is coming on. These people when the episode is going to occur will not drive or pull over (hopefully).

From what I can tell, OP has not had an issue caused him to feel he was putting people at risk with his driving.

This is not a black and white world.

Hell, half the people on the road shouldn't drive due to lack of common sense.

parasurfer-Glad no one was injured, good luck with whatever ends up happening with the car.

Very sorry to hear and glad everyone is ok.

I think the '09 would be a good choice. Don't they have a little more room than the 3G? I can't remember if it was you or someone else that started the thread on the wheelchair and additional space a long time ago. Do you have to stick with a car due to the height or could you get something like an RDX?

Hope you get the medications sorted out, that stuff can be scary. I've been through all sorts of meds for my back. Painkiller hell I call it. I had to keep pushing the doctor to try new medicines that were non narcotic because they just wanted to dope me up on norco and methadone and I'm not the type that handles those types of drugs well. Finally found a great non narcotic that works better than that evil stuff. To those that want to judge, ever driven when sleepy? That's what I thought.

Glad you're ok...typically insurance companies would give you what the replacement cost is, in other words dealer retail. Check KBB.com and NADA.com and ask for the greater of the 2.

No i did not. The dot would never clear me to drive like that. My dr clears me every year because im a paraplegic. not because i have low bp. Hell the drug has no warning for driving. I've taken ten years.

If i owe less than the value, where does my gap insurance come in if at all? Thx everyone for the supportive words.

I'm g;lad you understand. Being a flight instructor, I'm on nothing with narcotics as i'd surely be a liability. But im glad you understand how these things could happen.

Unfortunately, these recent "episodes" will likely ground you pending AME authorization. I assume you're well versed in the requirements of 61.53??

If you owe less than he value, which you should because every lender I know won't lend more than the wholesale cost of the vehicle at the time you purchased it. So, they'd write you a check for the retail value and you'd be responsible for paying off the loan from that check. If you have gap insurance through your lender I don't believe that would apply in this case.

I havent had episodes. My dr pulled the med that caused it, done. I'm the chief ground school instructor and manager of the flight school as the owner pilots our corp department. But I understand. I'm type-1 diabetic while at Embry-riddle and was pulled for a year of 0 occurrences. ;-). thats what should be done.

You're lucky you were only going 35 mph when you passed out. Scary to think what could have happened at 65 mph on a two lane highway. Glad the only thing hurt in this case was a couple of cars...

That sucks man! My 05 TL was practically totaled when someone hit me head on. I needed a complete engine replacement, but it wasn't my fault so I didn't have to pay for it, thank god. Glad you're ok!

Again i dont have episodes. I've been a paraplegic 10yrs this past jan 8th. have taken all the same meds from the start. It was a mis- type. Mods please remove the "s" from episode(s). because people are skipping over my correction.

I'm having someone take some tomorrow. I haven't even seen the damage.

To the others, thank for the kid words. I'm just ready to purchase the next car Acura has on hold for me. The wrecker people called and said they were removing my hand controls for me because they knew i may need them. This country still has great people the go above and beyond the call of duty to just be "KIND". I'm buying the company lunch tomorrow.

yeah because every 23yo mom of a 4yo driving a 96 grand am reads this forum... hmm. I just looked over my discharge papers i need to fax to insurance co. It has severe dehydration as the diagnosis. I guess that's why er doctor gave me IV and was dis-charged.

Still, it's generally good advice. Never know who's lurking.

So I have a question. Insurance Company called with a question I've never been asked after the accident. And I quote "when was the last time you got your oil changed"? Then she asks if I could have my dealer fax the invoice... Strange? Maybe not?

Hm. A short Google search didn't tell me why they would ask that. Are you over due? If not don't sweat it. If so then tread lightly as they may use it against you in some twisted way.
