Buying a TL-S that was fully repainted a different color?

I'm in the market for a TL-S and there is a local WDP one that I'm looking at. The owner said she rear ended someone and they replaced the headlight and she was able to repaint the WHOLE car.

So the original color was NBP and she got it repainted white from the accident.

I want to add the A-spec kit so I'm afraid that the color won't match.

okay, so what do you want us to do about it? are you asking if you should not buy a car just because a lip kit wont match?

a lip kit should be the least of your worries when buying a car. Things can always be repainted for a better match

A whole repaint on a car is a very extensive procedure, and most of the time it's not done 100%. the Door jambs, engine bay, trunk and body gaps are all going to be the factory color while the exterior is white. I would honestly look at the paint job and see if it's quality or not.

IMO, I'd use this as a tool to lower the price. Not only was the car in an accident but the whole color was changed. If it were me I'd buy it only if were a steal and the car checked out after a bodyshop and mechanic say it's in good shape.

Since everything is on computer these days, see if you can see the repair records from either her insurance company or the shop that did the repairs, and that way, you'll know how extensive the damage was. I personally wouldn't buy such a car unless finances dictated that I had to cut corners or spend a lot less

So you want to intentionally buy a car that has been wrecked, and probably half ass repainted a completely new color...and your concern is a matching an aspec kit?

Dude, get yourself a GOOD car first, THEN worry about mods.

The chances that a shop just covered a complete paint job are slim to none. Even if they did, it would have to have been because it was smashed in the front and they could cover the paint materials and still make a profit. Not only that, but say if they did cover it somehow and painted it, did they prep it correctly before paint? If not the paint will start coming off after a year or so, if that. You could end up having to completely strip and refinish the whole car again! All that being said, id keep looking man, seems like too big of a chance to take. Not saying im a pro, but i have worked at body shops since 17. Im 26 now. Id say pass on it.

I dont know dude. I cant buy that story. I would pass up on the offer and worry about the aspec kit later. Good car > aspec lip any time!

How cheap is it selling for? If it runs good/steers straight and is a bargain... but if it feels off, the paint is off, and the price is high that answers itself.

Thumbs down

Yeah...don't do it. Anything but factory paint isn't ever 100% perfect...if you don't have problems now you'll definitely encounter them with the paint later...UNLESS you pin down the place that did the body work and can have them ensure their paint for the lifetime of the car...then maybe

The factory paint is pretty thin and chips easy... if it's done right I don't think it's a bad thing. My factory paint isn't perfect.

OP, can we have more details? Maybe a link to a for sale ad?

as mentioned earlier that's a heck of a lot of work for a headlight replacement. Did they do everything like the spare tire well? check under the carpets?

I dont see anything in the add about it getting painted all over. It looks really clean from the photos man. Inside the mirrors looks to be painted well, Thats usually a place that doesnt get much coverage. Looks like a factory paint job from what I can tell. I would definitely look under the hood to see if anything is out of the ordinary though. Check hood to fender and fender to door gaps too.

Thats what i would do man!

I contacted the seller and she told me it was repainted. She said the whole car didn't NEED to be repainted but she could get it done free of charge and she wanted it to be white anyways.

It looks really good in pictures. In person, it could be a whole different story. Id deff check a car fax and make sure it drives right. Check for any off alignment on the body. Id also peak under the hood to make sure structure of the fender wells aren't crumpled up or bondo cracked. Looks clean as shit though. The grille was painted though so its deff not all original. Just tread carefully cause this aint no $2000 youre going to be spending. Good luck and let us know what the outcome is

Was posted on Craigs 18 days ago .. a good/great deal would have been gone by now. Sooo many scammers at the coast ... Brothers cousin owns a body shop so lets buy a write off and flip it .. etc etc .. No one .. I repeat no one crunches a headlight and then repaints the whole car ... just to sell it? How long ago was it painted?

also one cant really judge the quality of the paint job with those pictures... they are too small to make any kind of conclusion without seeing the car.

It was painted a year ago.

She has maintenance records from a local Acura dealer that is know for good service.

I'm going to look at it on Saturday so I will let you guys know. I'll try and get some pictures also.

Only thing I see off is the way the grille is painted but as I posted the key is in the door jambs and all the other areas. The big thing to look for is tape lines!

The craigslist posting says that both headlights were replaced so the woman probably rear ended someone. And as well it's plausible that she didn't want a black TL-S anymore and got it redone in white.

Check the car out in person, take better detailed photos and report back. I don't think this thread is senseless because the OP is asking us for actual advice on a car. Please give us an update.

No one gives a free paint job away... If its to good to be true it always is.

I wouldnt buy that car until I pulled the front cover off and checked out the frame rails to see if they we just bent around to make the gaps look good.
OR
Walk away and buy a nice TL.

So I went to look at the car today. It looked really good except some little things(pictures below).

The paint outside looked really good. But if you look in between the doors where the hinges and stuff are, there are some black spots.

She said that she knows the people at the paint shop she got it painted at and offered to go with me there. She also said that if something happens to the paint, I can call her and she will call the paint shop and they will fix it for me(not sure if she just saying that to sell it).

Didn't notice anything wrong when I was driving it except the alignment was a little off.

Some things wrong with the car:
-Alignment is slightly off. Goes to the right a little.
-Hood doesn't stay open
-Tighten fuel cap notification
-Flip key doesn't stay in

Here's the album if you want to see bigger pictures:

Tighten fuel cap notification can be the purge valve .. easy fix but expensive if the part is bought up here in CanaDuh. I did mine.

I would have her take it in to get an alignment and go with her. If they can do the alignment then you can rule out any frame damage.
I bought an Integra back in high school, white as well. The original color was blk. Mirrors, door henges, occasional running paint and dark spots aswell. I always wanted to paint the car! For an average joe they won't notice the little stuff but I would have her take the car back and get it repainted.
Car has too many miles, sketchy history, and coming to its 100k/7yr maintenance so your just going to be dumping more money as soon as buy it! Id pass!

hmm, like the poster said above, take the car to get an alignment. based on the rest of the shady history, i wouldn't be surprised if they cant get it in to spec due to frame damage.

No reason it won't go in spec. The tie rod adjustment for toe is very wide, you can point it in many different angles. Not saying the car doesn't have frame damage, but I'm just saying an alignment won't necessary tell you the whole story. You can easily have it aligned and the computer will show the specs in green but if there's frame damage it still won't drive straight.
Also, tires could be a problem when it comes to driving straight.

The paint job looks like the shop didn't spend a lot of time prepping. What I mean is they didn't remove all the trims properly to get paint in all the areas. For example they could have pulled the door sills up in like 30 seconds, but it looks like they taped around it. And they didn't even remove the mirrors to paint the back side. I'm sure it'll look fine to most ppl though. Just keep in mind here on acurazine we like to pick on little things. If these things don't matter to you then that's fine.
