Buying an '05 TL
Buying an '05 TL
I had a question about buying an '05 TL....I've seen and read alot of posts about transmission issues. I know there is probably no exact figure on effected vehicles, but I was wondering if there was anyway to tell if there was an issue with my prospective TL (other than just driving it). Does anyone know what the percentage of 2005's were effected with these faulty transmissions? Is the jerky 3rd to 4th shift just something that I will have to inevitably deal with? I've searched and haven't been able to set my mind at ease. The last thing I want to do is spend the money and find out I have to replace a $5000 transmission. Thanks in advance.

Check the VIN for any recalls. I think it was mostly 04's with tranny issues. I think it's the 2nd and 3rd gear that had problems. I'm sure someone else can chime in here on that issue. That price seems good, just check the history thoroughly.
I recently bought a 2005 TL with 83k miles for $14900 from a dealer.
(That deal is so nice!!)
but I have heard of that problem and apparently the transmission issue affects 2004 TL and some early 2005 TL.. when I was buying my TL, I was thinking... what if the previous owner sold the TL because they thought the transmission was going out... o.O haha
so just to be on the safe side, I bought myself a 2 year 24k miles warranty. But seems like 2005 TLs are pretty solid... no issues what so ever on mine

Just as an update, I bought the car. The transmission seems fine after a week of driving, but as a precautionary measure, I'll do the 3x3 with AMSOIL and have the shift sensors on order from Delray Acrua. Thanks for the feedback!
Did the sensor change and a 2X3 flush over the weekend with AMSOIL, and all I can say is WOW!! Big difference...like most of the other posts say, the tranny is just much smoother and predictable now. For anyone who hasn't done this yet...get on it! The shifts didn't seem bad before, so I really wasn't expecting any significant changes. I was really surprised. Thanks to whoever figured this fix out.
the 3G TL's transmission is worlds better than the 2nd gen TL. Keep up with the fluid changes and you'll be fine. The TL's transmission suffers quite a bit because acura recommends a fluid change at 60K, by then the fluid is burnt and garbage. It's best to change it every 30K, or do a drain and refill every other oil change.
