Broken into

So this past weekend, I was traveling out of town and someone broke into my car. Busted my window, stole some stuff from my car (mp3 player, sunglasses, etc.).

Oddly though, my Alarm didn't go off. The cop who wrote up the report said some car manufacturers do not put window sensors. If the thief popped the window and then tried to open the door, it would've probably triggered the alarm. Is that right?

Also, turns out my insurance will not cover the OEM window because its too expensive, especially when a generic brand can be installed at $235. I checked with windshield city in VA who said the same green-ish tinted window (brand called PPG) can be installed for the above price. Should I insist on OEM ($390 for the part + installation) or are generic brands ok as well.

Any advise would be helpful.

Though I must admit, really hurting that my baby was beat up (and lightly scratched) because of this incident.

I would spend the extra money, and upgrade to OEM. Many people on zine have had issues with other brands of windshields, do a search you'll find some other threads bout it

That sucks

Reminds me of when my 03 maxima had its lights stolen, that was not a fun situation.

Hopefully you can get insurance to pay for OEM replacements.

^ I had my windshield replaced. The OEM stuff has sound dampening material (they say) and is 'softer' b/c of it. Some insurance companies even have that as an option on their policies (OEM glass). So I would go with OEM. As for the window breakage, your OEM alarm is basically trunk, door, and maybe a hood sensor(not sure about this one) and ignition kill. Other than that it will not go off, if your car is lifted for a wheel jacking or the glass is broken, it will not go off. I think the alarm would have to have a Mic or shock sensor which the OEM stuff doesn't have. Now if the thieves broke your window and used it to unlock your door, then it should go off. But if they just went through the window, then probably nothing.

wait.. wait.. who said it was the windshield. The thief would have to been mentally retarded to break into the car from the windshield. I'm pretty sure the OP meant one of the side windows.

Yes its the passenger side front window, my reference to "Windshield City" is the place in VA which was recommended to me by Pohanka Acura.

The insurance company said that because of the car's age (being a 2004) model and the fact that the OEM costs $390 vs. $185 for the generic brand, they wouldn't cover the cost of the OEM.

^ I know he didn't mention windshield... but I'm just responding to him about OEM glass b/c I am under the assumption that the side windows also have some kind of sound dampening material manufactured in to them like the windshield did. My opinion is just to go OEM with whatever glass he's replacing.

bro he said window not windshield

if you have full glass this would go under the comprehensive no if and or buts about it

if the insurance is paying for it go for oem
if you are paying out of pocket course use the ebay brand

ps. thats correct, acura/honda do not come with shock sensors on the windows from factory...

Unfortunately since Hartford Insurance won't cover the $450 tab (installed) for OEM, it looks like I will be going with the PPG brand that the repair-shop recommended. $235 installed sounds a lot better plus I won't have to setup the claim for it and have my monthly insurance rate affected. It is disconcerting to know it's not OEM but when it's nearly half the cost, I'd rather bite the bullet.

Indeed it was....

There was a big lawsuit against Nissan because the headlights were so easily stolen. Nothing like the TL where you have to take the bumper off. Just pop the hood, two bolts and your gone. And at 1200 for the set, it was easy money for thieves. Did I mention they stole them off my car twice?

Even if insurance doesnt pay for OEM glass, I would be sure to pay the difference to get it.

I remember finding out by reading a post / article a while back in a magazine I think.. this guy bought a new Maxima and had his lights stolen 3 times in 4 months in San Diego.. I didn't dare consider getting a Maxima after reading that.

oh really? That's good to know. I don't know why the guy at the glass shop didn't tell me that. More importantly, is it nearly twice the price to have "Honda" printed on the window.

sorry to hear that. I have something i pay on my insurance, im not sure what the term is called exactly in english. Basically its "replacement cost as if new". I pay 25$ extra a mth for it and if my car gets stolen I get the exact value of what I paid on day 1 for it and every year they add 5% to the value of the car. Now, that being said, it also covers oem parts when getting in an accident, etc. so you dont get jobber parts. do you guys have a similar option with your insurance companies?

This made me laugh more than anything all week.

Check your policy and see if it says anything about "crash parts" or aftermarket replacements. If not, you can demand OEM parts.

bastards who completely disregard other people's property should be shot. We work hard for our things so that some idiot in a matter of seconds can come and steal your stuff. It's inconvenient as hell and money always comes out of pocket even though we pay insurance for years. My wheels got stolen last week and its still sitting on bricks, at least until tomorrow. Sorry about the rant but I haven't been able to drive my TL for almost 2 weeks. Going through withdrawals.....

Side window glass is thicker than normal I believe to help with noise. What I would do is take what insurance gives you and pay the rest yourself for OEM glass.
