Breaking in New TL-Type S
Breaking in New TL-Type S
I just purchased an 07 TL-Type S this past weekend and I wanted to be sure I am breaking the car in correctly. Right now I am varying rpm ranges and trying not to go over 4000 rpm when possible. For how many miles should i do this before I can start to have more fun with the car?
Personally, I like to baby it. I've read here and there about a 600 mile break in, so thats what I am doing. I have been varying the RPMS and trying to stay below 4500 RPMs.
Whether this is necessary or not, I don't know. I'm at 594 miles right now so it won't matter soon. One thing that is for sure is that it can't hurt the car, so why not take it easy while you're getting used to it anyway

both my salesman and my service rep told me that the car does not need to be broken in.... that it's broken in at the factory......
but the owners manual discusses how to break it in.... so i'm confused. my car is leased, so i just went with the salesman's statement and i'm lovin' it!!

actually thats not true, the first 20 miles are the most important in breaking in an engine. doing it easy doesn't help it can actually hurt since the rings don't properly seat
dealer told me do not use cruise control for the first 500 miles and don't push the car until 1,000 miles. Same with my old car they told me not to push until 1,000 miles. So as of now I baby it and people driving behind me probably think the new tl-s is weak b/c i'm driving so slow lol. when i hit 1,000 i'm going to find me a long stretch of road.

you are going to listen to a person who probalby has no clue about the car he sold you.
do some searching on yahoo or google, you see how things have changed over the years. engines are made with better tolerances than they were years ago
I'd follow the manual's advice. I did a fair amount of research into the subject after I bought my 07 TL a month ago.
rbf351 is undoubtably referring to Motoman's strategy for breaking in a car. I'm not saying this strategy is right or wrong, but I found no evidence beyond Motoman's word that it is the right strategy.
Therefore, it is best to err on the side of caution and follow the manufacturer's advice per the manual. The TL/s is too expensive of an investment to take your chances with an unproven and somewhat controversial break in process.

besides from that website from past experience, and other peoples experience there is no need to wait.
i can gurantee that when your car was filled up before you took delivery it was beaten on by the guy driving it to and from the gas station

According to the manual (07-at-non type-s), they say to avoid hard breaking and full throttle accelerations for the 1st 700 or 750 miles. I don't think mine broke 3000rpms during that time (too cautious I guess).
I also just talked to my service manager about the 1st oil change. Not to hijack this thread but I've always changed my oil at 1000 miles on a new vehicle and was pretty faithful to do it between 3000-4000 miles. I now have 3200 on my TL with my oil life at 70%. I asked whether I should change it now or wait. He told me that engineering says that they have extra additives/lubricants in the factory oil-fill so for me NOT to change it now and wait until the TL says so.
