Brake squeals

Has anyone had problem with brakes squealing sometimes? I have 6 sp navi, which means brembo brakes. I also read that, this is normal. It doesn't happen all the time, but from time to time at very slow speed. < 5 MPH. However, when it makes sounds, it's definately loud enough to hear it.

I took the car in for service, but they couldn't replicate the problem. I also heard, that they're not allow to spray chemicals that seals the brake rotors anymore, because it's known to cause cancer. Well, it's been a long time, since I owned a new car, so I'm not familiar with these kind of stuff. Any info would be greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

I have heard it a couple of times in about 700 miles.

Not a problem unless it happens most of the time.

I am just surprised at how much dust these pads create. My wheels are turning black in a very short time.

Mine squeal only when stepping on the brake very lightly at slow speeds. Annoying as hell. I hope it goes away over time.

Same here. I am not sure whether it is only at slow speeds, since it could be that I do not hear it at higher speeds or with the radio on, etc.

Wink

I recently have noticed it if I'm driving slowly in bumper-to-bumper. Every time it squeals, I look at the guy in the next lane in disbelief and then look at his wheels.

It is normal I read on this forum. (Squealing not looking).

Brake squeal

Well, I'm glad to hear, I'm not the only one who's having this problem. Like I mentioned before, it doesn't happen often, but it's there. My experiences are when I'm turning at slow speed and braking at the same time, i.e. parking, etc.

I too noticed that these brakes kick up a lot of brake dust. My wheels do get dirty rather fast. Thanks all for your info.

Might be a good idea to bust over to one of the G35 forums and do a search on this as well. I know the G35 owners have had some issues with their Brembos making some noise.

On a sidenote regarding the Brembos, anyone know the wear rate on the Brembos? I fully understand it's all based on driving characteristics; however, the G35er's have been complaining they need pads after 5-10K miles.

Hmm... I don't know what my VIN is off my head, but I know my build date is 12/03 as well. What you're describing sounds exactly like mine. Do you have 6sp as well? Did you take your car back to the dealer? Thanks.

brakes

I have a 5AT. 5,000ish build. 2350 miles. My rear breaks squeal when backing up and when moving forward slowly. This is my 5th Honda product. Honda / Acura are know for squealling brakes. I'll get them adjusted when I put in the shop.

Other Annoying things:

Rattles - driver side sunscreen, center console, and steering wheel.

Memory Seats - Gotta love them. They worked fine on the '02 TL-S. I dont understand how they screwed them up on the '04.

AM Radio - Does not work at all.

FM Radio - Slight static.

Tires - Flat spots after not driving for a few days. IE) Parking at airport for a business trip. Get back in car and it feels like driving on oval tries.

50 MPH RPMs - Shifts too early into overdrive. Low RPM vibrations. Once again, the '02 TL-S din't have this problem.

I'm not too worried. All the above can be fixed. The question is...How fast will Acura fix them???

Besides that, I LOVE MY NEW LOVE-SHIP.

Your brake issue seems a little different to their Brembo issue. Yours is almost the characteristic for Honda/Acura now. Two of my Acura cars all have this noise.

Yep same problem. Only about 6 or 8 times, low speed, light pressure, front only I think. 2200 miles, 6MT vin 179XX. I had a Porsche that had a similar problem. I think many high performance brake systems do this. I'll put up with an occasional squeal to have these great brakes when I need them.

High-performance pads tend to do this. I've been through several sets on my Civic that have done the same thing. They also dust a LOT.

When you're factory pads wear out, grab some Carbon Metallic brake pads, they are very expensive for pads but they create NO dust.

3 more squealers

We have 2 6mt's built around December; each of them squeak particularly after a bit of highway driving; both cars are between 2k-3k miles. I assumed I would deal with it ath first service.
My friend just purchased a 6mt and is experiencing the same noise. :o

Same here. Just picked up my TL on 2/29. Even being what I thought easy on the brakes, they still squeel pulling into garage and slow stops at lights...EMBARRASSING. My friend's EVO did this also. He kept taking it back...they tried everything from scuffing the pads to replacing the pads and rotors. Finally, they re-greased the rotor pins and his problem subsided. Apparently it was only the LEFT front brakes that were giving him the noise. Normally, squeeling brakes is just lack of brake grease between the brake pad and shim. But, it may be a bit more complicated with Brembos.

Wow !! I was afraid that I was nuts. I've got 300 miles on a 6MT. The squeal is at very low speeds and at the end of the braking. Not all the time - but often enough so that my wife thinks I got a lemon.

I have an appointment to bring the car in, but maybe I'll wait given all these posts.

Same situation here, only 75 miles on a 6spd and a noticeable squeal at low speeds. I've gotta figure this will improve over time.

my GT Brembo calipers squeal at low speeds (usually when it's cold) as well. and my mechanic (who has a wilwood kit on his integra) and i have narrowed down the squealing to the guide-pins that the brake pads are on.

a temporary fix is to place a layer of thick lubricant along the guide-pins (NOT ON THE PADS) to eliminate the squealing. as the brakes are used over time and heat is generated, the lubricant breaks down and the squealing slowly creeps back.

since the 6mt's also use 4-pot calipers, i have a feeling the design of the guide pins are very similar to the Lotus calipers i have. for those curious enough to try, it should yield favorable results.

remember, place the lubricant on and along the length of the guide-pins (should be two of them) and NOT on the pad or the rotors.

Do cotter pins hold the guide pins in place?

They do on my motorcycle with a similar setup. I only have 450 miles and do not wish to take off the wheels until I have some high-temp synth brake grease.

On my lotus calipers, cotter pins aren't used to hold the guide pins in place. It seems to be this thin metal plate that butterflies to lock the guide pins in position. When I had my pads changed this last time, it didn't even require the removal of my calipers. Took the rims off and then the mechanic was able to access, change and seat the pads. Once the butterfly clip is off, the guide pins should slide out without too much trouble.

I can't see how a hard stop would eliminate the problem. It only happens on light brake application. I would guess, as previously stated, that under light brake application, the brake pads are vibrating on the pins at a frequency that results in the sqeal.

Some high temp brake lube may be a good fix (for a while).

I've had my beautiful 6 speed dynamic package (brembo)anthracite/black TL for 4 and a 1/2 months. My first brake squeal was the day I drove the car off the lot. Since then, perhaps the cold of the Canadian winter has minimized the problem. Lately, though, as the temperatures have been climbing above freezing, I'm, squealing again. In fact, the brakes squeal on practically every normal (stop sign, slowing for the corner) type stop. We've had to brake unnaturally hard to solve the problem. If I forget to stand the car on it's nose, I draw fearful looks from pedestrians.

I love the way the car brakes, but the squealing is definitely tiresome.

I'm taking it in for my first service on Friday, but my dealer is not confident about the brakes, and hasn't even heard about the memory loss problem for the seats.

I have about 300 miles on my 6MT and the Brembos also sqeal at low speed after normal street/highway driving/braking. It's really annoying. I guess it'll be going back into the dealer soon for a fix.

Let's keep this post high on the forum so anyone who has had an appointment can tell us if the dealer addressed the issue.

I took my car in at the end of January, and they replaced my pads.
It has been over a month and I have heard them squeal/squeak once or twice, but nothing like they did prior to replacing the pads.

Same here! only when pressed lightly. 6MT with Brembo.

When I go in next month for oil change, I'll ask them to take a look.
