Headlights

Please post some pics. I've been debating whether to do this or not. I've got an 05 NBP 5AT. What tutorials did you use? Any tips/tricks you figured out on your own? Thanks for any input you might have.

apparently i dont have a very good camera ..its only a nikon coolpix...anyway,i used my heat gun for this whole process, not my oven, wasnt too bad. i also clamped it shut while i heated all the glue back up then let it cool back together.
i will take more pics tomorrow in the daytime.
the whole process only took me 4 hours or so,maybe 5...anyway lets hear it!

i dont want to say its a begginers mod,but its not that hard, pay attention to how you take your front end apart and dont pry too hard on your headlights while you are opening them,or you can warp/crack them and i would reccomend wearing latex gloves when you are touching the chrome that you are not painting,or the fingerprints will show badly, mine have some fingerprints on one of them and im kicking myself for it cause i knew better, and dont touch your bulbs because the oils from your fingers will make them yellow. also, dont paint directly on the chrome, buy 3M "wet/dry" paper in 400 grit and sand it under water (the parts you are painting) and it will sand easliy and you want to make the entire side peice white (the color of the plastic underneeth) and the other as much as u can black..sanding this makes it flat again, and promotes better adhesion to the plastic, also, you can use an adhesion promoter before the paint (which i did) which keeps the paint from peeling off from failure to adhear to the substrate. anything else just ask

Looks really good. You've convinced me to take on this project. I'm in the process of installing Dom's unit, Dice's unit, and a backup camera. Think this'll be next on my list. Thanks for the pics Delta!!!

yep no prob just be careful! oh,and if you plan on masking off the inside part of the turn signal like i did make sure to buy some GREEN 3M tape from autozone, and tape BEFORE you sand (prevent scratching the part you dont intend to paint)

i used seam sealer (what we use to seal new panels after replacing them) which was a peanut butter color...which now i regret cause it shows on the edges, but i will just lay some black over it later when they come back off and noone will ever know.

i used my heat gun for this whole process
I have read all about baking them, but how exactly do you use a heat gun. IE. how do you hold them, do you heat all the seams at once or work your way around, etc...

start on the inside corner and EVENLY distibute the heat by about an 8 inch motion on both sides till it is heated enough to pry apart, use a sturdy wide metal tool (something like a wide chisel or something) maybe about an inch wide or so..then once you get it in twist it like a screwdriver to pry it apart, once it starts to peel open u can use the heat gun on the glue that is peeling, but dont hold it too long in one spot because heat guns get hot enough to melt in an instant.
work your way around, and when u get to the turn signal part heat it verry good on the corner and pull the lens apart from the black housing...anymore questions on this matter just ask,i dont mind helping..

i always re-used the glue, and added permatex high-heat black silicone on the edges.. i've done a lot of these lights already, and so far.. no complaints!

i am always really generous with the silicone, which makes it 100% leak proof, but will probably make it a bitch if you wanna open them up again. i use black, so ya cant see

the latex glove thing, real important. my first set on my old car, i had finger prints all over the chrome strips.

...i knew better but before i realized what i did it was too late,i was trying to watch my son and do my lights at the same time..
butyl tape is what i would have used if i wasnt so impatient to do it...

it really completes the look of your blacked out car though..keep it up!
