Basic knowledge newbe question..............

Ok, be patient with me here........
Starting research to buy 04'+ TL 6 speed manual.
Question is.....In 04' was there a specific "sport" model or package offered on top of the base model?
In looking at much info online.....It looks as if any TLs delivered with a 6 speed man trans were equipped with a "sport" pkg of performance enhancements that the auto trans TL did not come with??????
Someone please slap me up side the head if this is way off, then set me straight if you would

No, you are correct Shifter7. The TL equipped with the 6sp manual tranny did come with stiffer suspension and Brembo brake calipers and pads, along with "High performance" summer tires. In my opinion though, they were crap tires

Shifter7- welcome to the forums.

For MY 04, 05 & 06, there was only one type of TL. The Type-S was re-introduced in MY 07. For 04, 05 & 06, the base TL either came with Navi or not and auto or MT. The MT vehicles came w/ a limited slip differential, thicker rear sway bar, optional high performance tires and Brembo brake set up which really set it apart from the AT TL's for those respective years (IMHO).
The Type- S is a different animal.

No need to put a flame suit on since we don't treat new members who ask legitimate questions in 3G like crap.

Ok, so looks like 04'-05' 6spd created pretty much equal......
Was the 06' change to 60-40% a big leap or not so much?
How about the front Brembo 4 piston fronts, big leap?
And the ECM change for torque steer, Big leap?
Thanks so much for being good to me.....kinda makes me feel guilty-

As far as model info.. some places use confusing names, pretty common ones:

4DR BASE
4DR BASE NAVIGATION
4DR SPORT
4DR SPORT NAVIGATION
4DR SPORT NAGIVATION SUMMER TIRE
4DR SPORT SUMMER TIRE

which translates to

TL Auto
TL Auto w/ Nav
TL 6 Speed
TL 6 Speed w/ Nav
TL 6 Speed w/ Nav + High Perf. Tires
TL 6 Speed w/ High Perf. Tires

For changes

04 New 3G Model Introduced
05 Change to front seat bottoms [additional stitching to help with wear?]
05 New Passenger Airbag light above haz. lights
06 New ECU programming for torque steer control
06 Tire Pressure Monitoring Standard

i might be wrong on the changes, but I think that's about right..

Welcome to AZ.

The TPMS (tire pressure monitoring system) for '06+ is a worthy addition. I would prefer the '06 over the '05 for that reason. However, the running changes are really pretty minor and not a big leap.

There was also a "factory" or dealer installed "A-spec option" for the '04-'06: body trim pieces (rocker panels, front lip, trunk spoiler) plus 18" wheels; IDK if there were different shocks used for the A-spec package from the factory. The 18" wheels are nice though.

The only big leap on the 3G is the TL-S version starting in '07, which has the 3.5 from the RL dropped in place of the normal 3.2. The suspension on the regular TL from '07+ was softened up just a tad while the TL-S received a stiffer suspension.

The "leap" in the '04 - '06 years was between the AT and the MT. The cumulative gains (MT + Sway Bar + Brembos) is a pretty good jump over the same model year AT.

I don't know if it's as much of a gap as the '07 Base to the '07 TL-S 6MT, given the add'l TL-S HP.

BTW - thats stock vs stock. Mod or A-Spec the AT and you start closing that gap.

The Brembos start to give the car realistic stopping power for its weight.
There are excellent aftermarket replacement rotors and pads for the Brembos.
Brembos are 4 piston calipers instead of 1 piston calipers- requires more expensive replacement parts as well- but worth it.
Some of us with gen2, 2nd generation or 99-03 TL, convert the fronts to a 2 piston caliper from the old Legend car of the mid 90s
The TL got bigger faster and heavier without a brake upgrade until Brembos, the rest of the models are still on the junk single piston!

the sport package had different suspension, its stick, brembos and motor mounts were made to be abused. everything else was the same.
