And the Award For the Nastiest Cabin Filter Goes to....

My eyes lit up when I pulled this sucker out. Every groove of the filter was covered in unchewed and chewed sunflower seeds, dog hair, and dirt.

Now I know why my HVAC system was lagging...mystery solved!

Check the condition of your cabin filter, guys!

Much better:

On a side note, I found out that those sunflower seeds still tasted good!

Joking, of course...sort of.

How much time was on this filter? It looks like it could be 5 years or more.

Oh oh, do you also play the game where you spit sunflower seeds directly into your air vents and whoever makes the most wins?!

I have to ask ... do you have an explanation for the sun flower seeds? Like do you know how they got in there?

Yikes...a good reminder for me to order a new filter.

Funny since my wife just had my car at the dealer a few weeks ago for an oil change and when she declined the B2 (maybe B1??) they tried telling her I wouldn't be able to change the cabin and engine air filters on my own. She chuckled and left.

I bought the car from the original owner. Judging by the condition of the filter, I would confidently say it is the original filter from 2006.

Undying dreams, I think you're spot on with your prediction. The previous owner did have kids and they probably threw sunflower seeds in the vents. I just can't fathom how else so many seeds could get trapped there.

When I was cleaning the car out, I found more sunflower seeds littered under the driver and passenger side seats, a baby binky, one baby sock, and mcdonald's fries.

I'm scared what I might find underneath the rear seat.

I was right! (probably)

Give that TL a thorough cleaning.

And if you need a carpet cleaner, Blue Coral worked very nicely for MEKO and I.

Just picturing the sunflower seeds getting into the vents reminds me of ....

I think you'll be okay here, they have a thin candy shell. 'Surprised you didn't know that.

These:

I remember these things when I was younger and lived up north, they were always falling everywhere. I haven't seen these at all since I've lived in the south though

I'm surprised I've never had an engine bay fire from the helicopter dealies, I have 3 trees next to my driveway and I get a free camo paint job from them, even had a dead baby bird under the hood of a car before. Kinda scared to change my filter now, just ordered one though.

I would say a Rodent had a home near the air intake and the seeds came in that way. The filter filters external air and that draws air from an intake in the cabin and not the air vents which exhaust air.

I would like to meet the owner who endured that for so long- you think he changed the ATF or the brake fluid?

Pulled this bad boy out of a customers car a few months back, your thread reminded me I had a picture of it!

And to those who asked, generally cabin air filters get contamination from either sitting under a tree or something alone those lines, or a rodent.

I had a customer once with drivability issues and lack of power, and the engine air filter was 100% plugged with leaves and such, the entire air box was full too.. Damn mice and rodents were getting up in there. They can be pesky though, had a customers car once that mice had chewed the injector wiring causing a misfire!

Bottom line is to be cautious of where you're parking!
