Back Story:

Alternator went up March 24 2015 and bought a new one at Autozone, I assume it was the duralast brand however tonight my alternator went up tonight the night before I have a 550 miles drive.

I am going to return it in the morning and get a new one, I know this is going ot be a battle with them but I am persistent and will get what I want.

Here is where I need opinions

Who is responsible for the cost of the new installation because it isn't going to be me because I bought a bad part from autozone that is a brand of autozone. Original installation was $210.50 from a local repair shop.

Has anyone ever had experience with this or Autozone in particular. Any opinions on where I stand with this?

I know that feeling, but I'm 100% sure autozone won't be reimbursing you for the installation of a new alternator. Their warranty only covers replacement of the part. And the shop won't do the labor for free since it was a customer supplied part.
In this kind of scenario, you should have let the shop supply the part so they can be responsible for it, but then it does depend on each shop.
There doesn't seem to be any way around paying for the labor except doing the labor yourself(not too hard if you have some basic tools). If I were you, I would go with a denso alternator as it is equivalent to oem so you dont ever have to worry about it going out for another 7-8 years. If you really want to get a free replacement alternator through autozone, you risk having it break down the road again.

AZ parts are hit/miss, mostly miss to put it mildly, but usually a decent price with lifetime warranty suck people in. They will gladly supply you with another unit, but probably won't pay for any incurred labor charges. There have been cases that some labor reimbursement has been forthcoming, but few and far between.
Just remember, when you return the unit, the people in the store only work there, they didn't rebuild your alternator.

Many years ago, installed an AZ alternator in Jeep Grand Cherokee. The original lasted 170k miles, first replacement 20k miles, second 15k miles, then the Jeep was sold. Have also seen 3 starters installed before one worked properly.

I stay away from AZ when these parts are needed and purchase new if possible, or have the local rebuilder do the job.

The shop is definitely not going to reimburse you.

They don't supply warranty on labor or parts when you bring your own parts. At least 90% of most shops don't

Just had a Denso alternator put in my 05 this morning. Total cost with labor and taxes was $286. I was kind of surprised my original lasted 10.5 years and 203k miles. Good luck OP and let us know how it goes.

on the labor. You'll get no fuss out of them about getting a new alt but no go on the labor bud. Also 210 bucks to install an alternator?!?!?

Agreed. A noob could install one in less than an hour.

$210 seems really high, but that's probably why they charged you more because the part didn't come from them. Good luck OP
