Anyone Cleared Out 04 Tl Headlights?

I REALLY want the amber reflectors removed from the headlights of the 04TL i have. IMHO it totally takes away from the look of the car.

Has anyone done this yet? The guy on the Gen II board is well known for clearing ANY headlight. He has offered to do for me. But, i would like to see what it looks like with those amber reflectors removed! Whats behind those reflectors? Will it look bad?

PLEASE HELP!!! I PM'd the guy on the Gen II again but haven't heard back yet if he has done an 04TL headlight yet.

Ok, I'm lost. What exactly are you doing to the headlights? Are you clear coating them with paint?

No, no, no. By clearing he means taking the amber color out of the turn signal - IE making them clear. Get it?

You can't "clear" the TL's front lamp assemblies and have it be legal unless you (a) use amber lamps that conform to SAE Standard J578c and (b) add new amber reflectors to the front of the car to replace those that were cleared.

In fine harddrivin1le style, here's a quote from the chief counsel of the NHTSA to a police officer asking about cleared and similar lamps:

http://fmvss108.tripod.com/interps/o...l__purvis_.htm

The removal of the original lamp and substitution of one that does not meet the color specifications for red or any other required color, or the removal of a lamp incorporating a reflex reflector(s) and replacing it with a lamp that has none, would be violations of Federal law, specifically 49 U.S.C. 30122, if performed by a manufacturer, distributor, dealer, or motor vehicle repair business.
and

under 49 U.S.C. 30112(a), it is a violation of Federal law to sell, or offer for sale, any item of motor vehicle equipment unless it complies with all applicable Federal motor vehicle safety standards and is certified as complying under Section 30115.

to be honest..i could really care less about the legality of it. cops and highway patrol in vegas don't care about mods. Hell, ive been pulled over prolly 10-15 times in my Bimmers and Acura, none had front plates, many had aftermarket CAI's...Remus & Comptech exhausts...etc.

i just want it to LOOK GOOD!! LOL

someone else be the guinea pig..i wanna see what it looks like 1st!!! lol

And you can't look at a Cali car without it violating smog laws, front tint is illegal (they have cali legal tint but it's so light you can't hardly call it tint), no non-navi monitors in view of the driver etc etc etc.

Hell, I guess we all drive the speed limit too in our TL's.

I guess I;ll be the guinea pig. I have been in contact with MR and we have an arrangement in place. I am just waiting for my Injen CAI intake to arirve next week so i can kill two birds with one stone and install the CAI, remove the headlights, send them to MR and get them back 2 days later...put the headlights back in and put the front bumper back on.

Guess everyone will be wanting pics...Ill have to charge $5 a pop per emailed pic to recoop my costs of the headlight conversion LOL! j/k

I will be doing Vegas_TL04 headlights in the upcoming week and I will post some pics. The one on the front page has a clear reflector. I think that is over in Japan since they dont need orange reflectors. They are impossible to get. The only thing would be to get them custom done but I would need to get 1 so I could show the person who makes them.. They would be expensive somewhere in the $90 to $100 range because they are pretty big reflectors. IMO I dont think it worth it...

hey in CA, it is legal to have white signal lights (http://www.chp.ca.gov/html/streetlegal.html) but does that mean you can clear out the yellow/amber reflecters also?

It is illegal in the US to clear out the amber reflectors. It's a violation of the Federal Motor Vehical Safety Standard.
