Exclamation Any Ideas!!! My crazy exhaut pipe likes to devour plastic bags

I'm posting here to get the most attension. This is crazy but it happened to me twice and now with my comptech catback , my midpipe ate another plastic bag and now it's burned and spread all over my pipe and stinks once the exhaust warms up. All my attempts to remove the burned plastic from the surface of the pipe failed. I am so mad.
My question is did anyone else had similar experience and if yes any success removing the crap. I guess I'm just unlucky with this. I try to dodge these kind of things on the road and shopping malls but it still happens to me. My car's suspension isn't lowered but still it does sit kinda low to the ground. So do I just let it burn out like I did the last time although the big black burn mark will stay, or is there a solution short of replacing the pipe. Please share, I know I'm not the only one, I hope.

Thats probably a good idea if you cant get it off with some type of paint thinner or chemical that wont mess with the metal....sand it off!

I used to see it all the time when I worked on exhausts. Not much you can do short of sanding it off...I've never really tried much else, hasnt happened personally and when I pointed it out to people they didnt seem to care.

Plastic bags are usually made of polyethylene and won't dissolve in much of anything. So I think you're choices are to sand it off, or take it out on a nice drive to Albany on the Thruway and burn it off.

It happened to me right after I bought my 2nd gen in 2000. I had no idea what was wrong, so I took it to the dealer. The service advisor knew right away what it was and showed me. It burned off entirely in about week.

It really sucks when it happens.

Thank you guys for all your replies, very helpful, I'll try to sand it since nothing else I tried worked and see what happens. By the way the CT midpipe isn't stainless so that doesn't help either. It's just sad that it had to happen to me again, I know it's not the worst that could happen but still I just got the new exhaust and now this. Oh well, if nothing works I'll just leave it there, at least it will burn off and won't stink no more. Thanks again everyone I'll report back, I hope it doesn't happen to anyone else, watch out for this kind of crap, and even dry leaves or else it might light up since the exhaust hangs low. This thread should be a reminder for folks to drive and park more carefully.

I had a different plastic on mine.. a bit thicker...

I drove around for a bit to get the exhaust warm and then went under the car with a putty knife and scraped off a lot of it... it was pretty thick in a few spots... it still smelled as I could not get it all off, but it did not take long for the rest to burn off..

I've been lucky so far wit the TL but my old car ate a few. I just had to let them burn off. Sanding is probably more work than it is worth except to get the thick parts off.

There is always that sinking feeling when you see it go under the front but not come out the back

It happened to me when I had my accord. It stinks like shit but the smell will eventually burn off. I'd say a few weeks or so.

Happened on my dad's lex sc430 (stock) with a large black trashbag, we tried a few things and nothing worked. All I can suggest is to cut off the excess and then wait for it to burn off, thats what we had to do. Took about a month to get rid of the smell.

In my opinion, you best option is to get your hands on sandblasting unit (it might be not that easy). If you use enough fine sand, you will be able to remove only what needs to be removed and you can get to the tight spots inaccessible to the sandpaper.
