Angry Another TL Wounded

45 minutes ago I backed out my garage taking extra care because my dad's car was in the driveway and I have to back out at an angle. Cleared Dads car and kept backing out very slowly into the street - always mindful of the kids. Then I hit something - my mind screams WTF could that be!

My neighbor’s mom parked her car on the other side of the street directly across from my driveway. She could have parked anywhere else – there is plenty of room on the street and no other cars, but she has to park across from my driveway. No one ever parks there!!! I never saw it. I was hardly even moving. Her car wasn’t damaged because I hit her rim. Ultimatley, this is my fault and I just don't want to admit it.

I got a deep gash on lower passenger side of my bumper. The plastic is so mangled that I doubt it can be fixed without replacing the whole bumper cover.

Here is the question. If I do need a new bumper cover, can it be ordered by the dealer, painted, and then just installed quickly when it’s ready? That way I wouldn’t leave my car for 3 days. I only have 7k miles so the paint shouldn’t have faded yet.

Just writing this makes me feel better. This is the only place where people understand.

Sorry to hear this. I would normally tell someone to look out the rear window a little better, but I know in the TL it doesn't help because the visibility is so bad, especially with the rear headrests.

The dealer will only send you to a body shop, unless your dealer has their own body shop, so if you know a good one, go there. They can order the bumper and paint it when it arrives, and then you can go in and get it exchanged.

Probably have to leave it for a few hours, or maybe all day, but it should be able to be done in less than a full day.

Get the next bumper with the backup sensors installed. Believe me this will be the last thing you will ever back into.

Every time I read something like this I am grateful I got them no matter how ugly some people think they look.

I am considering the backup sensor. This is worst car I have ever owned in terms of rear visiblity. My wife mentioned it right away after she drove for the time.

The thing that really pisses me off about the whole incident is that I thought I was being so careful backing out - not like I was in a hurry and not paying attention.

Sorry to hear that. My back up sensor might look awful to some people but surely it saved me from hitting other object so many times.

Unhappy

I have been selling OEM FMC parts for many years now. I can't recall a bumper cover ever coming in prepainted. It is always primed and ready but that is the most they do.
I also done inventories at countless other manufacturers dealership and have never seen a cover come prepainted there either.
Sorry to hear about that.

I guess what I am hoping for is that I can have the paintshop look it over, order the bumbper cover, paint it for me, and then when its ready can simply install it. It looks like an fairly easy component to install. My goal is to avoid having my car in the shop for 3 days.

I know Volvo does, and a pre-painted bumper cover for my V70 cost me about the same as an unpainted Honda bumper cover lists for.

Honda color-keys the plastic body kits. Why they do so for the add-on body kits and not the bumper covers I do not know.

I just had the rear bumper cover of my wife's new Oddy off to install the backup sensors and it's about a 5-minute job each way.

That sucks man. My mom did that, in her minivan. She was pissed so she semi-floored it in reverse. On the flip side she caused abot 2-3k in damage to the other car.

Gotta admit, never done a Volvo inventory.
I guess Honda does it to help insure the body kit matches the factory paint??? That is a good question either way though.
Back to the original question, it shouldn't take 3 days to do that job though. From all the dealings with body shops I have though I will say one thing is pretty sure though. They will wait till the car gets there before they paint it. They don't want to have time and materials put into the cover and then the owner of the car doesn't show up to have work done. And that happens more often that you think. If you let them know you want to bring it in and have it done, they can make an appointment for you but it would probably take the better part of a day for the whole deal to go down.
