I think the voltage regulator just went out in my wifes 05 TL 6spd, The battery was smoking and very hot to the touch and making a bad smell so we had it checked out replaced the battery. Now the car is doing it again to the new battery so think it time to replace the alternator I search and came up with nothing can someone provide me we a walk threw on removing the alternator.

I would at least measure voltage at the battery terminals. See if you're getting too much voltage. When mine went out it made a loud whining noise and stopped charging but it caused some lines in my navi screen so I don't know if it was "dirty" power or what. I limped the car around by unplugging the small plug on top of the alternator so it wouldn't try to charge anymore and I charged the battery every night or every other night so I could drive it to work till my new alternator came in.

I don't have a DIY but once you get in there it's pretty self explanatory. A large bolt underneath, a bracket on top the bolts to the head that needs to be removed. You have the plug I mentioned earlier and the charging cable on top. I can't remember for sure but I think I had to remove my fans too. It's a 30 minute job, probably a 15 minute job now that I've done it once.

Be careful of an overcharged battery, they can be dangerous. Once I smell that sulfur smell I get nervous. What kind of battery is it?
