If you really want to learn about your TL, get the service manual. I just received mine earlier this week.
Not only does it show that the HID lights switch to high beam with a solenoid actuator, it has a lot more info.
For example, in the sales info it shows how the climate control adjust for heat load on side of the car vs the other. What it doesn't show is that it is far more complex than a temp or photo sensor. Not only does it have that, it also receives information from the NAVI about the inclination of the sun, the direction of the car with repsect to the sun, and other info to try and figure out the proper air balance to keep a constant temp. This truly seems to be getting into overkill. I fully expect that once it gets to summer, the only thing that will matter is MAX cold
