It ain't thhaaatt quick :) me v G

I'm pleased to "report" that I beat a G today. Was a pleasant run from the top of 2nd, to the top of 3rd; took off after 3 honks. Beat him by about 2/3 of a car length All that hype about the G(35), I was just curious everyone makes them out to be super cars. I guess I sure showed em' up
Unfortunately, I'm relatively positive that it was a stock automatic (newer - had the bubbly tail lights). Just thought I'd share

I don't think most of the people 'in the know' make them out to be supercars.

G35's are pretty quick cars. Granted I have yet to meet a G that would beat me on the street. But that just me. Too many variables. Stock for stock, they would definitely edge out on their worst day.

some ppl talk them up like the g35 is so fast and all this but its also a 3600lb coupe some ppl say its weight holds it back a lil.. i had a friend with the older G35 with i think the 280 Hp it was and he always talked trashed about my car how infiniti is better and hell destroy my accord .. one day he called me and was like bring that POS accord out so i can beat it i was like what ok..lol i went out we raced 3 times from a dead stop at a red light and twice i took him once he beat me and thats only cuz i hit the car in Neutral like a reatard..but if my slightly modded accord can take it then i can see a TL taking it.... but the kid couldnt drive for nething also a factor..lol

my sister raced a G35 b4 in her 04 TL and beat him after that he pulled next to us and was like nice car we were like we know and left..haha.

hmm... nice kill.
but do you think you could keep up with a g37s?
ive driven one before and i have to say, it feels pretty damn nice. and the interior isnt cheap like the g35 coupe. i guess nissan learned something, but they still got the analog clock lol. FTL.

I always enjoyed my time behind the wheel of my boy's G35. He never beat me and I have never had one that has but it's fast nontheless. I wouldn't say one is truly faster than the other, just different kind of cars. They are way over hyped performance wise because of the well received style, it is a good looking car, and nothing like it was ever offered at that price point at that time.

I hope that you're being sarcastic. I don't think the Infiniti interior as nice as some of the same class cars but don't you see that most of the luxury cars have analog clock?

To OP, good kill none the less. But since that you positively think it's a stock auto and you're heavily modded beat him with 2/3 of a car length then the G is a decently fast car.

To the OP, are you 5AT or 6MT? You have quite the mod list and only edged by a car? I'd think you'd beat an auto G35 by more than 1 car with those mods.. Nice kill nonetheless.

I'd have to disagree. The 5AT TL's, even with those mods, are still stuck deep in the 14.7-14.9 range, possibly worse. I still contend that it does take some skill to drive a 5AT G35. You've got to stall it up a bit on launch and manually shift the 2-3 and 3-4. If you don't do any of this, you're going to be about .3-.4 seconds slower. The VQ35 motors really don't come alive until around 3000rpms. Without stalling up the TC a bit, the car can be a bit pokey in the 1st 30'.

I would have to believe with his mods on his TL that he would be faster than the 14.7-14.9. I have seen a auto TL with intake run 14.7@97MPH. I would think a 14.4-14.6 wouldn't be out of the ordinary for a TL with I/E/P/Precats/Jpipe.

I think the OP mentioned he started the race in top of 2nd gear...so the only reason is probably the driver of the G35 didn't do manual shifting.

97mph is the fastest I've ever heard for an auto TL, stock or modded. 93-94mph seems to be the norm. Modded TL-S 5ATs are runnings 14.3-14.6s@96-98mph. I just don't see it happening with the 3.2 5AT. A 2nd gen 5AT with headers? Sure. A 3rd gen 5AT 3.2? I don't think so. Take a look over all the time slips from the 5AT cars and you'll see what I'm talking about. Honda did a huge disservice to that motor by undergearing the 5AT.

The problem is a lot of the guys who posted the time slips are not very experienced. Usually it's the first or second time at the track.

I mean if the driver is good, like RUF87, then even a 2g TL-S withOUT headers, performance motor mounts, Hi-flow CAT, IMMs, Bored out Intake & TBs can do 14.46@96mph.

Perhaps if you spend some time in a TL, you will be able to beat most people here

Just found this on you tube. A 04 TL Auto with less mods than erick3 running consistant 14.5's@97xxMPH. He even ran 1 14.3!

I don't see a mod list and I really can't tell if it's an auto. It doesn't say one way or another.

Mod list is posted in the video description:

Fujita CAI Intake
TB/IM Spacer
ATLP Cat-Back Exhaust

Come on Dave, even I can tell it's auto! It's a givaway in the 3rd run, hear how the car is being launched, and hear the shift from 1st to 2nd gear. It's really really obvious.

I think the most obvious hint is the fact that the car didn't shift into 4th gear. The 3rd gear in a TL 6MT can only go up to about 90mph. So in a 1/4 mile run, a properly driven TL 6MT would go all the way to 4th gear. This didn't happen in the video though, so it's a 5AT.

May be this video will help, pay attention to how the car goes from 1st to 2nd gear:

I believe you. I just can't hear any shifting over all those silly farty exhausts, whether it's the TL or the 4-bangers it's racing.

Anything is possible, but you've got to agree that this 5AT TLs performance isn't the norm for all the 3rd gen TL slips posted on this site. This 5AT is running as quick as the 5AT TL-S' on this site and so far we've had three AT TL-S' (of varying mods) run 14.4-14.6@96-98mph. There will always be those rare cars out there that run .2-.3 and 1-3mph faster than the rest. Usually you can chalk up to some skill and track/conditions. I eagerly await seeing more of these 5ATs run mid 14s.

couldn't have said it any better! You can tell its an auto by the long out drawn 3rd gear that the car finished in down the 1/4 mile! As we know a 6MT TL isn't going to finish the 1/4 mile @97MPH in 3rd gear. It would be in 4th gear at the time.

lol, like I was saying before, what can we do? Most drivers here aren't the best drag racers. When you read those posts in that racing and competition thread, most of them are new to this, you know, first or 2nd time out there. If I remember correctly, it took you 70+ tries to get your best time in your Maxima?

I think its more normal than you think. It just depends on the track and conditions. I don't see many G's like yours in auto form running 14.3@99MPH but I know you are a better driver and are running the car to its full potential. This TL guy probobly just knows how to drive his car unlike alot of poeple that post up slips.

Thanks! Not to mention a 6MT with those mods would do high 13's to 14s flat at about 100mph, again, with a decent driver!

There are actually quite a few auto G's running in that range on the G35 forum, if I remember correctly. But one must also admit there are WAY more people drag racing in that G35 forum and they are much more professional than the people here!

I didn't realize that. I guess I haven't seen that many sedans out there. Just the coupes.

The G35 being RWD is alot more fun at the track I bet!

you know what, I'm not sure if those G's on the G35 forum are sedans or coupes..could be both? And that's probably another point, I'd imagine more people would race their coupes than the sedans? I mean, we see a lot of CL guys racing and a lot of those near stock At guys are doing mid 14's while MT ones are in the 13's and low 14's. There are quite a few guys trapping well over 105mph too.
