Installed the AEM today

I installed the AEM CAI today. It comes with great instructions including step-by-step photos so I thought I'd give it a try and save some money. Hardest part was getting the rubber inner lining out from the wheel well.

Anyway, on the inital test run I defintely noticed more "punch" especially in 3rd (I have a 6MT).

Question for those with the AEM or any other CAI. I noticed when I turn the car off, I hear a sound like "mmppph". That's probably not a very good description but my best guess is that the intake expels the air that is in the tube.

Does this sound normal?

my car makes the same noise after you turn it off with the cold air installed.

Honda's have been making that noise when they have an intake on them since intakes were available for them. It's nothing to worry about.

Mainevt,

did you receive/install this yet? I seem to recall seeing pics of your ride in another thread where you had this AEM cai installed (red), along with a resonator-less comptech exhaust. Can you comment on the performance improvement with this combination?

I have had an AEM on my last three cars which were the RSX, 2001 Prelude SH, 99 Civic Si. It always performed as advertised and sounded great. No question!

If you want any points for reference please check clubrsxcom and search my name for dyno charts.

I purchased my AEM for the TL 2 weeks ago from autocarparts.com and they initially sent me the CAI for 96-00 Civic DX but I emailed Tim and he had me a new one sent out which just arrived today 3/3 - I will dyno my car this Saturday at Streetflight.com and then I will put the intake on and re-dyno to provide you all with absolute results. If someone beats me to it that is fine but I will do my part to help you guys get the knowledge you desire. I'm betting this intake will outperform everything on the market and if Hondata comes out with a program you will see 300whp with just CAI, headers and computer upgrade.

As a background I have raced Hondas for over 8 years - I do not plan on racing the TL - maybe I will make a pass or 20 but not over do it.

I previously held #2 spot in 2003 for fastest ALL-Motor RSX S in the U.S. - this was with just bolt ons and ecu upgrade - no race header at that time.

That's a VERY impressive time. Considering that you had only I/H/E and Hondata #4. I've only heard of very few people getting into the high 13's/Low 14's with this combination.

Hi Nodoze2004
My friend is in the process of scheduling a dyno for my car. The AEM intake is a big disappointment if you solely buy it for the purpose of sound. It is fairly quiet, but it does run a bit quicker

Mainevt,

Thanks for the info

Can you comment on the Comptech exhaust? In addition can you contrast the performance of you r ride (with the combo exhaust and intake and the resonator removal) vs a stock TL?

I am debating whether to sink more $ into this car, or trade it out! I recently drove the new Caddy CTS-V and was simply stunned by the performance!! The rush of 400hp is hard to ignore, plus with the available supercharger (which adds an additonal 100hp at the wheels) I am seriously re-considering the TL as a performance sedan. As a reference , the stock CTS-V performs better than the current gen M3, and the previous gen M5.

If you get the chance, swing by the caddy dealership.....it is one hella ride!

Keep us posted on the Dyno, as I would really like to keep the TL!!

The CTS-V is a sharp looking car UNTIL you see the inside. That monolithic center column is right out of the seventies. The CTS-V is also about $60K so it doesn't really compete with the TL at all. Also, they are having a LOT of difficulty getting the actual performance of that car under the promised 5-second figure. As a matter of fact, Caddy dealers are being forced to buy them back in some cases. IMHO, $60K could be better spent on either a (1) Used 2004 E55 (469HP) or (2) As 85% of a new 10-cyl M5 (if you can even get one) if your looking for a performance/luxury sedan. The STS-V "may" be better as I have not seen the interior so I can't tell if it has that funky center column

Based on the response this thread has recieved, I expect that the runor of an actual AEM CAI unit is greatly exagerated.... It is sitll possible that the unit exists but it's also obvious that anyone who has tried to put their car on the Dyno appears to have been so his-heartened that they "apparently" withdrawl into the fetal position never to return to the light of day...

A buddy of mine is having his highly modded STi dyno'd this afternoon on one of the four wheel drive Mustang Dyno's. I have been asked to join him and bring my TL. There is a slim possibility that they can dyno my 100% stock TL at the same time for FREE!!! If this happens I will have my baseline. If the AEM unit is truely in existance, I will see about getting one and then running a follow up dyno at the same shop (for $60 bucks afterwards) and will then provide the reports on each run. Don't hold your breath as I have not seen a REAL AEM unit in person myself yet. I have seen what appears to be a re-brander Injen unit that most people appear to be buying off ebay.

bklynpanman - Just trying to get some information actually flowing here. Seems that nobody can product dyno runs (even after having promised them). Pretty dis-hearting. I did get a free dyno run today while some buddies were running their Suburu STi's (moded and stock). The guys running it were still learning the Mustang Dyno so that's the reason for the freebie. The numbers were lower than I expected while they ran it but we learned after the run that the Dyno was still set to 4WD (even though they had "tried" to change it to 2WD (Set to MD-750 instead of the correct MD-250) so I am not certain how accurate these are but my figures came in around 185HP & 179lbs torque at the wheels. We didn't have the actual curb weight for my TL so we estimated at the weight of an accord (3625). Temp was 69 degrees and 23.2 humidity and a baro of 29.08. Maybe someone in here who reads and understands dyno's better than me could tell me how that calculates out. Once I get the AEM, I will run again so that WE WILL FINALLY have before and afters (which is what this thread is all about anyway, right)?

BTW - I will be in NJ around the end of the month so maybe we can get together and take that engine tour. Heck, I'll even buy you a beer for your troubles so no offense intended or taken here. CU on the road!

all in good fun.... good luck on your quest.. if you didn't get the CAI yet.. try ptuning.com.. reliable place.. oh and yes.. those #'s are off.. I've seen a dyno of a stock TL come in at 229 at the wheels horsepower, which we thought was low...

No problem. Kne wit was off but this was on a Mustang Dyno. Dynojet runs tend to run higher than they should. The Mustang is suppose to be more accurate. Mine is an auto so I expected to see about 205 or so but I can't argue with FREE so it was pretty cool. This way I can actually do a before and after with a CAI. I'll just have him set up the after in the same (incorrect) settigns. The difference should apply across the board irregardless of the accuracy. I would then have him run another reading with the settings properly calibrated. Anyone here know the true curb weight of these TL's?

I feel bad fellas - All the dyno time in my area was booked up far in advance and I got impatient so I installed the AEM before baseline dyno and I apologize for the as I promised I would give you all my results. What I do have for you is that I went to the track last night and made 3 passes...

My best pass was my second pass - the only pass where I remembered to turn off the VSA and I ran 15.90 with a 2.370 60' time and hit 97.67mph. This was a fairly conservative pass meaning I dumped the clutch at 3000rpm and had to let off the throttle so my all season radials would catch traction and then I hit the rev limiter in 2nd gear. I used lift throttle shifts as opposed to power shifting which I will do after I get used to driving at speed. My car has 980 miles on it and I'm pretty sure I would not have gotten a 14.59 stock.

my other passes came in at 14.67 and 14.78 with traction control left on and it does make quite a difference.

Next I am going to change my tires to some Falken Azenis or some of the new kumhos before I make any more passes at the strip - I might have a new exhaust by then as well - anyone know of other exhausts besides comptech - not a big comptech fan at all

I will try to get to the dyno and I'll see about finding a baseline TL dyno to match it up with because I am sure they are all pretty consistent.
