Acura TL Main keys Stolen
#1
Hey My car was stolen yesterday morning. I was heating it up and went inside to get my lunch and came out and someone jumped into my car and took off. Authorities found my car the same day, unscathed but my keys are missing. I don't know if they threw them away but I can't live in fear by parking my car outside my garage for them to get in. I have my spare keys and remote. If I reprogram my keys and remote will the door still open using my stolen key? Or if it does will my alarm sound? I don't know if I have to but new locks for my entire vehicle and that will cost $1,100 from the dealer!
buy not but sorry I don't know how to edit my post.

lesson 1: do not leave car unattended running with keys in it.
sounds like if you want to make sure your car stays safe...change the locks. see if your insurance might help you with this (its worth a try).

OP glad your car was recovered. Where I live people go to sleep with their doors unlocked, though we don't. It's a relatively small, I mean small town an pretty much everyone knows each other and if you dont know someone its a guarantee that you have a friend/aquaintance who does. There isn't much auto theft at all here. Now in Pensacola thats another story. Its a small city an theres crime. There hasn't been a fall/winter that I haven't started up a car and left it there to warm up. Might of fact i used to keep my doors unlocked all the time, leave it running when I went in the store sometimes. I'm breaking those habits an have been doin a good job the last year or so. I've learned by watching others that crime happens EVERYWHERE an ANYTIME. Get your locks changed asap an ask the insurance company if they'll assist you.

I'd get the lock changed for sure. Quick question...was there anything in your car that had your home address or work address on it? If so they know where you live and work and if you don't have a garage it'll be pretty easy to get to your car again. Best to play it safe.

Thanks
Thanks for all the replies guys. I know, the car shouldn't have been unattended. I didn't realize I would get it stolen. Stuff happens and people leave their cars unattended all the time. Lesson learned. I'll talk with my insurance. I'll see what they say. As for the keys, is there really no way to just program the keys I have so that the ones they have won't be able to open my car? They stole the car from my driveway. So yes they know where I live. But my house keys weren't on it. As a matter of fact all I had on there were my car keys. So I'm not afraid of them breaking in. I know that I can program my car where it won't start, but they'll still be able to get in. I think. I'll contact my dealer. Just wanted to know if any of you knew anything about the alarm system and programs. Changing locks cost sooo much money...

I seriously doubt that the insurance company would help you out. You left the keys in the car while running, so it was negligence on your part. Which you did own up to. If they did help out with this, i would be seriously surprised. Good Luck with everything though.

you can go to the dealer and ask them to reprogram the chip. because once you buy a new key they have to reprogram all the keys over again. problem solved. they will probably get in your car with your remote or your key but not start your car.

Maybe you can find someone willing to trade locks with you for some cash. You can have the immobilizer reprogrammed where the keys no longer start the car and the remote doesn't work. But the person will still be able unlock and disarm the car with the key.
Might be cheaper just to shave the key holes

Reprogram your keyfob right now so they they cant open the car up before they are walking to it. this will completely deprogram the stolen one. the key will still be able to open, disarm, and start the car tho... trick them with the keyhole delete and buy some sort of steering wheel locking mechanism and remove everything from the car for now...

Its a TL 2005. I like the idea of changing the locks. I'll see if I know anyone with a TL that will be willing to trade. I'll put in a bit of cash for it too. Who knows. Easy money for them. Thanks for all the help guys. I thought that a deprogrammed key won't be able to open it. So idk

Do this for now plus the relearning keyfob to make it just a little harder for now.

1> There is a way the car forgets all the remotes....thats covered....
2> Do the shaved door lock mod....they key is covered too....
Done for less than $50 !!!
GREAT POINT by UA6....Make sure/recollect if you had anything with address (they know this already but well)/SSN/Credit Cards/Wallet/Phone etc etc that they could steal your personal info from....

Let me try to find the link with the reprogramming the onboard computer so it forgets the keys for you....even if you take it to a dealer, they would charge you $70 -100 maxxxxx

swoosh- hadn't thought of the shaved door lock. as soon as someone posted that i thought, hey that's a good idea. then of course he would still have to get the key/fobs reprogrammed which i know is also possible. then again OP should have never left his car unattended to begin with.
calm down. he asked for suggestions...i offered one, if he chooses not to do it, then hey no skin off my back.

^^let this be a lesson NOT to do that. people nowadays will resort to doing a lot of stupid dirty things...like steal people's cars literally when they aren't looking. this isn't the 1950's anymore, there are too many assholes in the world. i wouldn't be as trusting.

if you have a habit of starting it in the morning to warm it up then get a remote starter installed....

Can't on a manual. And they do come in handy. Leave the switch for your heated seat on and set your temp for the next morning and start the car inside get in, not only is it nice an toasty, but your buns are toasty also. I love a warm seat.

Yes you can have a remote starter on a manual car. There are safety features built into the alarms that know the car is not in gear. Viper has a special series of things you have to do to enable the remote start. its like press the brakes, put the e-brake, let go of brake, push the remote start button, turn car off and lock car... Basically all the shit you would normally do except push the rs button..

Hey guys! sorry for the late reply. Just got back from work. Thank you so much for all the replies! I learned my lesson, I never even knew that it was actually illegal. I'm also lucky the cop didn't give me a ticket. My dad told me that in winter police take patrols around neighborhoods to see if people left their cars running unattended and hand out tickets! So phew, I got lucky there as well. They don't have any of my personal information. My wallet wasn't touched at all (all my money and everything exactly how I left it).
Now for the goodies. Thank you so much for the shaving the locks suggestion. This will work perfectly! I can just just get the locks hidden and reprogram the keys I have so my stolen remote won't work. Super easy fix and cheap too. My insurance won't cover me anything.

Sorry to hear OP. Honestly, I do the same thing sometimes. Open my garage, start my car so its not freezing, and then go inside and grab my coffee, etc. I'd never expect my car to be stolen in the couple of minutes I'm not in it either.

Yeah the last thing the OP has to worry about is whats not recommended LOL
I would install a remote car starter and prolly an alarm system....i rather have a remote car starter on manual than getting my car stolen

it's a car-drive it
On Sunday I was not prepared for the snow/ice in Jersey. In fact I was wearing shorts. I did start the car and go back in the house. The next door neighbor was in his patrol car doing his morning work on the computer. He had it parked in the street facing my mom's house.

So I went to the dealer and got the end cover part of the handle. I just bought the left rear one then took off the metal bracket that it comes with. I replaced the one on my drivers door so that the lock is now hidden. It's actually not that easy to take off. And you need a sharp tool. Chances of them knowing my lock is inside the cover is very slim. Regardless I'm still taking the valuables out and reprogramming my spare keys. So at the very worst if they figure out that theres a cap, and have the right tool to take it off, and get inside my car using the stolen keys that are highly likely to be thrown away, they won't be able to start my car. And there won't be anything to steal. TADA?
