Acura not certifying one TL over another?

What would be the reason a dealership would certify one TL and not another one, assuming its the same model and year.

I'm looking at a TL-S in my area and the dealership has three of them, one of them is not certified and just says internet special. The non-certified TL-S has 16k miles but is from the east coast and was a lease. Here's the link to the carfax, it looks clean...

at 16k miles its only scheduled to have 2 oil changes so far
Sometimes its a problem with the car, accident history or other issue
Carfax only knows what it was told
the SALES MANAGER should be able to tell you why- its their decision which cars they do
It has nothing to do with past service history

Sometimes they want to offer a choice on saving the 1500$ more they get for CPO and its extra warranty--not everyone thinks they need it, or they can only finance so much

If you are going to keep the car past acura limited warranty- then CPO is worth having to cover you for more years

If you view the ad, under the price of $29,990:
Vehicle available for transfer from Charlotte, NC 28212
Looks as though the car is at one of their dealerships in NC. If you view other offers, you'll see they also have other vehicles listed, not only from Charlotte, NC, but Concord, CA as well.

Having said that, dealers will have non CPO cars available, normally at a lower price. When I purchased our WDP w/Nav, it was the only TL one out of 4 that was not a CPO vehicle. After getting to the price we both agreed upon, I asked them to make it a CPO car which they did, then I purchased the 7/100 for $850.

Can someone tell me exactly what the benefit of having a CPO car is? Is it just so you can get the extended warranty or something else. I ask because mine was certified and I've had a TON of things go wrong with it. I personally think the CPO means JACK!

All CPO does is extend you warranty to 100k/mi. My mom has sold Acuras in NH for 10 years, and most of the time when you buy a CPO car, you're going to pay more (usually about $2500-3000 more) than a car sold "as-is" with whatever is left on the factory warranty.

The OP mentioned that the car he was looking at was an "Internet Special", usually that means the price is going to be lower because it is not certified, and the car has probably been sitting on the lot for a while and they're trying to be rid of it. The "Internet Special" price is usually close to the rock bottom price they will take for the car.

I'm sure all dealers are different, so my above statements are only based on what I know about my moms dealer (Sunnyside Acura, Nashua NH) and how they do business.

What about buying a non-CPO car and buying the extended warranty from a third party? Would that be less expensive than going CPO?

Depends on the cost of the vehicle plus the cost and coverage of the extended warranty. Need to look at both, but a CPO vehicle does offer more options than just the warranty coverage, roadside assistance, loaner vehicles from most dealers, etc, and the ability to add full coverage bumper to bumper for @ $1000, and normally the vehicles are in great condition.

IF the dealer "follows" the manufacturer's CPO guidelines, a CPO car can be equated to be a car that is in above average condition, has no hidden problems, any recall work is done, no immediate maintenance is required and a extended warranty is added to the original warranty.

The big question is how closely does the dealer adhere to the guidelines.

A CPO car only represents what shape the car is in at the time of certification. Who knows what will happen in a year or two ?

If its a Type S, chances are it's still in warranty. You can purchase the car and the extended Acura warranty for piece of mind. CPO honestly does not mean a whole lot to me as different dealers will adhere to the standards differently. If its a crap dealer, chances are they slapped a CPO tag on it and called it a day.

I appreciate all the repsonses. I will first go test drive the TL-S and make sure everything is cool. If possible I can ask them to CPO the vehicle and if not then I assume they will offer me an extended AcuraCare 7/100 package at a cost which I could then try to get on the cheap at around $800. Is there a 10/100 option?

White Venom the VIN is 19UUA76527A012005.

I guess I'll ask, how can you test drive the car when it's in NC and you're in CA?

I just ran a Vin status-- only two warranty claims on record one being a battery and the not sure at the moment(not at work will have to run a part number to reference) it was sold from appletree acura in Asheville,NC where I used to live. most likely a lease trade in that was bought at an acura auction. looks to be a clean car with no problems the warranty repair was done at 149 miles while the car was most likely still on there lot--reason for the battery replacement or charging battery

Venom,

Thanks for the check bud. I'll have to go take it out for a test drive. Maybe this is the one.

Oh snap, you guys are right, damn, I didn't even look at that part. I didn't think they would be advertising this on their local site in Cali. Well at least we learned a few things about certification.
