Acura made photo cameras?

I just had this come in the mail. The lettering is the same as the vehicle lettering.

I tried to find anything on this product with no luck. Any help with finding its origin? It was made in Japan, I’m guessing the mid 80s.

From my Googling, the brand is Akira not Acura. You got a knockoff of a knockoff...

The akira line of cameras are cheap plastic cameras that look like SLR's but are not

Can you show me the links? It clearly says Acura on the camera. Nothing about Akira.

No no. That shit is a knockoff. The real brand is called Akira, presumably after the famous Japanese director Akira.

Why don't you Google akira

Dam it, it looks like the Akira. I thought this was a long lost Honda experimental project...

"Accura" was a 1960s/1970s distributor trade name used on a variety of Japanese 35mm lenses, accessories and at least one twin lens reflex camera. Accura was also a line of Olympus cameras in the 1990s.

The branding here was likely an attempt to ride off the name, not that Accura was all that well known. These chintzy plastic SLR-like cameras ("dual viewfinder," lol) were sold under pretty much any name they could think of.

through my limited amount of googling; seems like there's a big following of these plastic toy cameras.
the plastic lenses give the photos a pretty cool effect
