About our mufflers

hey. waht is it that makes the car sound nice deep roar? i mean for those of you who like the G35 coupe's sound. could we get the muffler from them and cut our tips and weld it together and get same sound? or does the whole system have to do with it..?

Nice deep roar?? Mine must have missed that stage of assembly, 'cause it sure ain't making nice deep roar exhaust notes. Granted, there is an exhaust sound, but not like my former '02 Altima SE with a full Mossy catback system.

To really get a sweet sounding exhaust, we need two more cylinders and about another 100 to 150 cubic inches of displacement.

You can't really get the same sound as the G35 coming from the muffler. In my opinion the G35 and the 350Z sounds like they have no resignators in the exhaust system. The TL has a total of 2 resignators which kinda softens up the tone of the car. My friend has a 04TL and he took both those resignators off, and just had a muffler shop connect end to end with a straight pipe. This might give you more of a louder zippy sound like the G35, I don't know if it will sound the same but for sure it will sound alot different from stock.

i would just make the pipes slightly bigger (2.5") from the cat to the rear and change the mufflers.

All engines have a characteristic sound, based on numerous physical attributes. It is unlikely that using the G35 system will produce the same results in the TL.

Certyainly, removing the resonators and changing the mufflers can do the trick, but you are talking a lot of combinations. I would either wait for some adventurous soul here to do the $ and legwork, or first remove the resonators one at a time, and see if you like the resulta. Resonators have little or no effect on power, and can be used to tune the system (especially the intake), for better power distribution. They get a bum rap on the 'Net.

Even my Mugen system on the S2000 retains a resonantor, and it produces a wonderful tone - no fartiness at all. But it also does not drone to the point of headache, or unpleasantr longer trips. Everyone likes the sound of pwer, esp on a sports car, but on the TL, which is not my sporty car, just great transportation, I am taking a wait and see.

I have been a Comptech re-seller for 15 years, but do not have the system on my car, as an example. I did have the full C'tech on my 2002 Type-S. (Headers, spriongs, catback)

BTW, it lowered the value somewhat at trade-in - many people in the TL market segment want a stock car- thank goodnessd the used-car mgr did not notice the lowering springs.

I did what Road Rage suggested doing, remove one at a time and see what it sounds like. I wound up just replacing the first resonator with an aftermarket one and didnt notice much, if any, of a sound difference. going with a larger diameter pipe will lower the tone. Removing the resonators will give a harsh sound, dont recommend doing that. All in all, take your time with what you cut out so you can weld back in if you dont like how it sounds.

When I installed a full Mossy catback exhaust on my former 2002 Altima SE, I received a lot of low-pitched droning in the cabin from about 1500 RPM to around 3000 RPM. I got used to it but I know that on a long trip, it would become a concern, especially for my wife. So one month later, I had a 4" x 22" Magnaflow resonator installed (round with 2.5" perforated core). This dropped the droning by 6 db and left a nice low-pitched sound. Mossy uses 2.5" high quality stainless exhaust piping throughout (stock was 2" with a 20" section of 50% pinched pipe right before the split to the rear mufflers). The Mossy mufflers are supplied by Magnaflow and are the 14829's with rolled 4" tips and a 2" tuning tube.

I had a friend who installed the Greddy EVO's on his Altima SE and I thought they sounded too ricey.. not a low toned sound at all.

You're just not going to get a really good sound out of a V6 engine.. unless you like that kind of sound. To me, I like an American V8 sound. Nothing like it and the best I've ever heard from the factory was the mid-60's big block Corvette with the open chambered exhaust in both side pipe version or the under-the-car version. Just incredible sound from the factory.
