About to get TL, what to do first?

Hi All,

I love this forum and have been reading everyday for two months now.

Once I get it, I mostly want to customize my new TL inside, not too much exterior stuff. My To-Do list includes 18" Wheels, Tint (with moleskin), interior sound dampening (brand anyone?) and eventually, I would like to make DVD show on NAV screen. I think I'll be happy with the audio system as is, but I like the idea of a very quiet interior, hence the sound dampening.

Anyone have suggestions as to what to do first? Am I missing something that you feel is a must-have?

I'm open, especially since I haven't even received my car yet.

Thanks in advance,

David

The car is pretty much perfect out the box. I think you listed everything unless you want to dump some serious $$$. G'luck and make sure to post pics!

I am in the same Boat. I have been reading on here for months and will be getting my TL in about a month.

I too am wanting to play DVD's though the Navigation. The sound dampening sounds interesting and i will definitely be staying tuned to see how that works. Another option I am looking to do is find a way to play MP3 cd or DVD's. Whether it be through the system or though an external player.

If it's up to me, I would look into the DVD playing on your Navigation screen first. I believe there is someone who has done this on here already and houses the dvd player in the rear arm-rest. It looks really sharp but i only saw a pic a while back and not the post. That is the way I think i am going to go.

If you have any other methods that you are contemplating please post coz I am also open to any ideas.

Thanks Jerky..

What are your possible options for DVD players?

I really liked the idea of slipping on in the rear armrest, it looked good and can be hidden nicely.

Also, make sure you post some pics once you have completed the install.

Thanks,

Jerky: Where on that site can i find the converter you spoke of? I only see deadbolt sna garage doors.

Let us know how hard the install is??? Do you just hook it up to the back navi drive?

I just spoke to avelectronics and here's the down and dirty. The convertor plugs right into the nav box in the trunk. The DVD player plugs right into the convertor. You can even plug extra DVD screens and a MP3 player directly into the convertor. EASY!!!! You just have to find a power wire to plug into.

$525 for the basic convertor ($575 for the one with S-video)
$250 for the single disc DVD player ($595 for the 10 disc)

I'm going to do this on my 05

I was just about to post the same info.

I think $575 is a bit steep for just a video converter.

I didn't know it all connected in the trunk, that actually works out great. I was going to mount an xbox in the trunk as well and was contemplating the DVD player in the armrest. The only problem is that there is no pretty way i can think of to store the game controllers. Anyone have any ideas? =o)

Murphy: How are you going to impliment the DVD player into the interior? or are you going to leave it in the trunk and get the changer?

Not exactly that simple. You have to splice into the XM cables too, otherwise no audio.

If I buy the single I'll most likely put it in the back arm rest where the cupholders are located. However, I like the idea of a 10 disc changer in the trunk as well.

Thanks for all the contributions.

I read somewhere on this forum that there was another dampening material that is not petroleum-based, so it doesn't give off any post-install odor. I just found the name - it's Cascade Audio, in case anyone needs to know.

Thanks,

David

Here is the status of the AVElectronics dvd nav converstion

http://www.avelectronic.com/products.htm

I ordered it from them, calling them and doing credit card

I got the nav converter, as well as the single dvd player with tv tuner (i may be able to get some tv stations while at stand still)

i have an appt to get it installed.

After talking with fiance, we want to install it in glovebox (dvd player) so she can access it quickly.
(shes paying for it, so its up to her )

One weakness however, Im told that the sound doesnt connect to the radio with a wire, the converter will emit a FM radio frequency that the radio will pick up. needless to say it won't be the highest quality of sound that you would get on a home system, but oh well.
(its my understanding that companies like blitzsafe are creating the audio adapter that will allow you to 'hardwire' the converter into the stereo)

can anyone qualify my knowledge or have any suggestions?

Installation: Im hiring a stereo shop to do the labor ( a few hours) for about 150 bucks

they have to run wires, and stuff, so its not stuff that i want to spend doing (it would prob take me 8 hours, and i could screw up...)

likley some seats will have to come out in order to run them correctly.

Dafried, IMO, the interior with the windows up is very quiet, other than the road noise every car will pick up. Info can be found at Dynamat Using Dynamat will also increase the weight of the car.

^--- I agree, the car is very very quite as is. You won't need dynomat unless you are planning on putting a system in your car. That is actually what dynomat was made for.

Thanks for your input Hawhyen51 and J Ride.

I'm a quiet cabin freak and I will be ferrying clients around in my car all day. Based on your posts, I'll wait until I actually own the car to decide - late Oct

Thanks again,

David
