About to buy an 04' TL but have a serious question....please help!
I am looking at a black/grey 04' TL w/nav at a dealer for 21,000 and I did a carfax on it and everything was clear except for "inconsistant odometer reading" .....when I go into see the car I feel this should be mentioned which will be on thursday, is it possible to 'roll back' or disconnect a digital odometer that the TL has? I don't want to buy a car that has false mileage on it......any ideas or comments about this ? Please I'd like to hear some.

Get the VIN and call an Acura dealer to see what service/mileage they have in their data base. Lot of problem changing mileage as I assume you need to change the ecu, if not the dash cluster also.
As the Carfax report should give a listing of dates and mileage figures, take a look to see when and what has been changed. May be as simple as someone reporting the incorrect mileage to DMV during a title change.

My guess on this would be the lawsuit against honda for false odometer readings some 02-06 models overstate mileage. To find out more about this there is a web site www.odosettlementinfo.com . This would be my guess on that one but im not positive, im sure that if is possible too to disconnect the odometer, but on the newer cars it is probably quite hard if you disconnect somethings the car wont run and certain things wont work!

I'm not quite sure but I strongly believed that it is possible. But if your Carfax indicated that the mileage is inconsistant then there might be something wrong. How inconsistant are we talking about? What is the mileage anyway? It should be average if it is at 50-60k.

Another possibility is if the guage control module was replaced incorrectly the mileage with the new one would be zero'd out, the vehicle should display a TMU true mileage unknown sticker for legal purposes!

He had a Trans Am, you need the fuse in to start the car, but once it's running, you pull the fuse for the instrument panal cluster. You don't have a spedometer this way, but your digital odometer also stops counting. However, if a dealer were to look at it, they could very easily tell by the computer history that the mileage is actually higher than what is displayed. The only way anyone would really get away with this is by selling private party and hoping the person didn't take it for an inspection (which I'm sure most people don't).

If gauges have been replaced they have to start at zero. When I had mine replaced on another car that is what happened. Dealer gave me a certified receipt showing the true mileage at the time of the change. Might be something as simple as that. I would certainly check to find out for sure.

I would first find out from Carfax what the definition of "inconsistent odometer reading" is. That term is very subjective and could mean any number of things. Don't go immediately to "someone has tampered with the odometer".

On my Saab, the instrument cluster needed to be changed and it holds the mileage(woohoo new car; 0 miles). The carfax might just be reporting that the instrument cluster was changed. I would look into it before buying because it could also be an indicator that there were other electrical problems going on and the instrument cluster was only part of it.
I would buy the car if things could be explained to my satisfaction or if the price was heavily discounted.

it's me, Alan Rickman.
Another possibility and this has happened several times to my friend @ work (car dealership)
You have several people writing things down.. sales people write down trade info; DMV clerks report info; etc.. so when there is a title change and mileage is sent in, then sent in again by the dealer and it's wrong, you get incorrect carfax data
Example..
Buy a used car w, 20k miles on it; sale reported to carfax w/ mileage @ 20k
Year later, you goto trade it in, with 31,322 miles
Title change again (from you to dealer); carfax gets an update showing 31,322 miles
Dealer sells car; DMV clerk @ dealer or other person makes a typo, reports car sold @ 31,200 miles
You now have an odometer alert on carfax and DMV marks the title as "TMU" or total mileage unknown. The dealership has to submit information to DMV to get it corrected, and if they want a clean carfax they have to submit info to carfax to get the record changed
So it could be nothing more than a typo..

I went to test drive the car today and check it out, the car has 35,100 miles on it, the car seems in perfect mint condition. The dealership that is selling it bought it from an acura dealership thru an auction, it is still under warranty for another month or so. They told me this is definatly the actual mileage, I'm going to call up Acura and give them that VIN tomorrow and see exactly what went down with that "descrepency" it could be a vast variety of stuff but from what I can see, the car runs flawlessly, shifts smooth as hell too. It seems like I just really may have found a sweet deal for 22 K pre tax. Black with grey/black interior and navy and moonroof.
