9006/9005 conversion

Has any tried converting a 9005 (high beam) so that it will fit into a 9006 socket and receptacle for the TL fog lights? I saw some post and instructions from another forum (http://www.bmwe34.net/E34main/Upgrade/More_light.htm). It should make the fog lights a bit brighter especially if they are Silverstars.

Not a good idea

This conversion only applies to ellipsoid headlamp styles. The 9005 bulb doesn't have a cap to allow the cut-off to function properly, so you'll have essentially high beams instead of fog lights. See how many people flash you then.

Ellipsoid lamps can use a 9005 bulb because the lamp itself incorporates the cutoff, so the cap on the end of the bulb is not strictly necessary. In these, and only these applications, I can attest to how well it works, as it transformed the headlights on my '93 Audi S4.

Thumbs up

I have made this conversion. I'm using Sylvania Silverstars. I used to do this with my Integra. All you have to do is modify the top tab of the bulb and it will fit the 9005 housing. I used a dremel tool to shave the top tab. Silverstar bulbs are 60 watts, stock is 51.
The left bulb is the Silverstar.

The Silverstars are an improvement over stock, it might be too bright,......naw!!

i did this exact same thing on my old car. 98 accord. used the high beam bulbs for the regular headlights. it works great! a lot brighter! a lot easier to see!

then it melts your housing and wires.... have fun

i ended up ghetto rigging it so that it would even work. custom clips from the wires to the headlight connectors and some electrical tape. enjoy that!

I did this on my 93 and 96 Honda Accord. The lighting output was great. I didn't have any problems with the housing or wires all the years that I did this.

there was a post where someone bought the Hoen xenonmatch 51w 9006. it's not brighter but it matches the color of the HID better than what i see here with the silverstar pics. they posted pics as well. check it out unless you really just want brighter bulbs.
