I went with Hawk HPS from Tire Rack about $100 shipped. Its a good quality pad, but i noticed the stopping isn't as good as the brembo pads. However, there is little or no brake dust.

I installed Rotex Gold Kevlar pads last spring, primarily to reduce dusting. The dusting dropped 80-90%.. in other words, major difference.

They were around $120 for the front set. I think I got them from BrakeWorld.

I did a search a couple of months ago, and this site wasn't working right. Still isn't. Maybe I will get more luck if I call them.

Stock pads work good for me. 23K miles and I have well over half the pad left but I drive 90% highway so that is to be expected. The dust doesn't bother me. I keep 2-3 good coats of Zaino on the wheels and I can either hit them with the hose and it all comes off or I have one of those mini california car dusers than I can run over the wheels if the dust is light.

I feel the stopping power / fade resistance of the stock pads is great.

I had to call them. The website they were running didn't have any information on the 3rd gen TL.

rotax kevlars.. i think from brakewarehouse.com .. they are awesome pads. very minimal dusting and absolutely no noise.. make sure you bed them in properly and follow the link on this forum somewhere on how to do it.. It is really easy to change and didn't take long

I like the stock grip so I am going to use a Wagner pad that claims OE performance and are quiet. I want to find the least expensive stock feel pad since they don't last very long. Wagner Thermo Quiets are the least expensive pads available for the 6MT and come with shims. Pads are about 33$ at Rock Auto. I'll be installing them soon on newly surfaced rotors and a fluid flush.

Hawk high performance ceramic pads, I think they are as good as the stock pads, and much less dust. After I bed them in, they still make noise sometimes. I got them from Tirerack for $105.

When installing Hawk pads be sure to follow the break-in procedure exactly and then enjoy them!

Isn't the bedding procedure the same regardless of the type of pad?

Im using the PBR ones sold off ebay......no dust.....braking power is as good as brembos only when u really hit the brakes other than that they are super soft. Not for nothing I have 40K on the rotors and I bought new ones just to have and acura said theres about 75% life on them is that even possible or does it make sense? when i lined up the new ones to the old ones they look juussssst about the same maybe a mm or 2 off.

"Green" ceramic pads from Summit

I replaced my OEM pads for the "street" version of the green ceramic pads from Summit racing at around 23K(?) for about $110. Maybe 25% less dust but zero fade. Granted, I drive my TL hard but the OEMs faded too often and the ceramics have been great. I will look at others that have posted for the next set due to continued dust (again, better, but not great).

Oh, and bought the Acura piston spreader - makes it the easiest brake job ever. Tool was like $145 and the stealer wanted $135 to change, when I supplied the pads. No-brainer.

....first post here - glad to be a part. I see several common items on the posts as my car (35K miles now) - 3rd gear a pain, wouldn't shift into 1st the other night, rattle from the subwoofer/rear-deck, noise when taking a corner when cold, general interior rattles. However, love the car and will drive it for 10 years+ (if I don't destroy it before then!).

One aspect of all this that's hardly been discussed in these forums when it comes to brakes is how the rotors are resurfaced. All Honda and Acura dealers have the machine that resurfaces them ON THE CAR. That way, the rotor's new surface is perfectly aligned with the car's suspension and wheel spindle. This type of resurfacing has yielded me the fewest problems over the years with my previous Hondas and is the ONLY reason I've had my brakes done at the dealer. I'd rather have low dust 'GREEN' ceramic pads than the OEM's, but I am yet to find a repair shop that does this kind of resurfacing.

You've heard of GM Synchromesh FM fluid, right? What are you waiting for on that one?

"You've heard of GM Synchromesh FM fluid, right? What are you waiting for on that one?"

LOL! Call me forgetfull or lazy! I was holding off until the normal change period - doh! I have 35K miles on the ole girl! Guess I need to get on the stick.

I wasn't too worried about the surface of the rotors when I changed pads - they were super smooth and had no warping. I'll check their thickness at the end of these "greenies" and if they are thin (I have heard the ceramics really eat up your rotors) I'll probably pick up some cross-drilled or other such with my next set of pads.

I might have considered the stealer replacing the pads if they had explained what they were doing for me for $135+. I have not been very impressed with Nalley - I'll leave it at that for now...

The rear brakes drive me nuts, however. With just a slight amount of brake pressure they squeal. Apply more pressure or let off and they stop. This doesn't happen all the time (or I would *have* to fix it or go crazy) but just enough to be annoying.

I just don't get this. Isn't a new rotor the same as one turned on a lathe. If a car has the wheel bearing built into the rotor then it sounds logical but for a flat disk ? A brake specialist here will turn a disk off-car for less than 10$ so it is probably cheaper than having it done with the on-car lathe.

This whole thing sounds like a make work plan for dealers and repair shops.

The TV show Motoring said to find a shop that has a Hunter on-car brake lathe since it cuts an eccentric groove which helps prevent brake noise.

I have not heard any technical reasons for doing the machining on the car.

Buying a new rotor is equivalent to having them machined off-car.

I went to the dealership have a 04 TL 6 Speed manual. They quoted me 500+ for the front and 300+ for the rear. I have Brembo brakes and was wondering is there a cheaper fix. How does everyone feel about taking it to Midas for a brake job?

Welcome to AZ....

a) do it yourself

b) go to ANY reputable auto shop, they will do it for you.

c) dealerships are stealerships...repeat this line 5 times in your head

I just use a large screwdriver to push the pads back & seat the pucks, works fine, generally one pull on each pad.
