6MT first gear issue

when shifting into first I need to clutch in and wait like 5 seconds to go in or else it makes like a audible clank/crash noise, if I wanna get into first quick I clutch in, go to second, then slide it straight to first, works fine every time, I also can’t get into first unless I’m basically stopped or else it makes a grind, other then that when in first and shifting with my ghetto 2-1 method it works and sounds fine. Is this a problem with the synchro? Does first gear even have a synchro? When moving in first it’s smooth and no clanks or grinds, at low speeds it’s kinda jerky but that’s probably my motor mounts lol.

Could this be a clutch issue, it seems like tranny to me but I’m not an expert so I figured I’d ask here before I go fork over cash to my mechanic to diagnose it

Also does someone know if these transmissions not bad to work on or would I be better bringing it to a transmission shop

If only in first, I would be pointing blame at the synchro. If it is happening in other gears as well, I would be pointing on the clutch not disengaging 100%.

I have used the 2-1 shift pattern in every manual car I have owned. Don't really remember why I started doing that.....it was 25 years ago and that habit just stuck. I don't recall any of my cars ever grinding 1st, but I recall one or two of them fighting first if still rolling.

im new to the forms how do I get In contact with him lol, also forgot to mention I have had third pop out on me before, like sometimes it just doesn’t wanna go in so I go back to neutral and retry, it’s not a constant issue though. This car has me scratching my head since I bought it, but I love it so it’s hard to give up on it lol.

since I’m having motor issues as seen in my other thread if I have to pull the motor I’ll probably just pull the trans too and bring it to a shop to look at

On the third gear pop out thing, replace the MT fluid with GM Friction Modified Synchromesh. It's a miracle liquid. Might even fix your first gear problems, who knows.

Here's a link to it: amazon
