6-speed rattling

Hi everyone,

Wanted to introduce myself as new member and thnak everyone for their experiences with the TL. I bought a 2008 TL-S as a result in silver partly because of the activity and help on this board.

For the past month, things have been going great but now the 6-peed tranny is making rattling noises in 2nd and 3rd gear during acceleration. Of course, the third gear is hit or miss when cold, but the second gear issue is concerning since I have only 5000 miles on the car.

Does anyone else have these issues? Any suggestions what it might be?

Hey! First, congrats on the purchase!

There are many great things about your car, as you know. But, you have hit upon the worst thing about the Acura manual tranny . There is a recall on the transmission currently at Acura if you want to go that route. If not, I don't know about the "rattling" part, but trouble engaging gears, especially 3rd gear, has been virtually neutralized by this product:

I will personally vouch for it, because I use it myself, and it has fixed all of my tranny problems.

evanj5,

the rattling sounds almost like change rattling but slightly lower pitched. this rattling occurs at lower rpm when the engine is lugging but continues all the way up to 3000 rpm. The tempo of the rattling increases as the revs increase until it finally disappears. initially, i thought it was the low rpms stressing the engine but then why would it continue to 3k?

the idea of the third gear came to mind but the fact that it occurs with second gear could possibly mean that the 2nd gear synchros are going bad?

as far as mods go, i haven't done anything to the car at all. it is still completely stock.

the explanation above probably doesn't diagnose the problem but input is appreciated.

Thanks guys

They still can't get it right with the trannies on these things...

Do yourself a favor and trade the car when it is 2 years old and get something else. The hell with the having to get GM fluid and taking care of pispoor quality and design.

instead of looking at it that way, i looked at it as one of my first mods. i worked at a GM dealership at the time and got three quarts of it, and also threw on a comptech short shifter at the time and it was like night and day. the 6mt is a pretty good transmission other than the 3rd gear issue.
