is the 6-speed faster than the auto transmission tl 3G

They're both 14 second cars. Does it really matter in 14 second land?

"I hate cars" answer is good. If your talking about just simply running two cars side by side one with the auto, the other 6spd, In theory, the 6spd would win if the driver knows how to drive the car. One missed shift can cost a race, and possibly an engine in these cars. Difference in weight and rotating mass is the reason why the 6 spd would be slightly faster though. Ofcourse I havent heard too much about light weight flywheels or torque converters. That would make a difference. Not enough aftermarket tranny parts for these cars IMHO.

Yes it's faster. The auto TL is limited to, I think, 127 MPH. There is no built in limiter in the manual and top speed tends to be around 150 MPH.
It's also quicker. Perhaps by as much as .7 seconds, which is quite a lot of time.

A driver mod might help but I have ran my Auto side by side against a stock 6-spd. We went from a 40mph roll and instantly he started walking away.
Tried it again and with me getting a jump and he still managed to walk away from me.
The 3rd attempt was when we hit it going around 75mph and we stayed dead even.

I've hit the limiter in my auto at 150mph

Full of water...
this is mis-info..sort of. its a year/trans issue, not an AT/MT issue. I believe the 04-06 AT, I have an 06, have a different trans and a different limiter. its dumb to speed but my car has easily gotten to 135mph with no signs of stopping.
but yes, MT should be faster. AT is heavier, has different gearing, and does rob power...but in my opinion it still makes for a fun ride

Be sure to start a new thread next week about what is the best oil for my TL
95% of the respondents will be 6 m/t owners Even though they are a small percentage of owners, they are the most verbal when this topic comes up
I have owned both the 6 m/t, and my present 5 a/t, and prefer the 5 a/t.
I could have either.
Under certain conditions the 5 a/t is faster (see below). The 6 m/t is more efficient, less weight. and had the advantage of a LSD. It has the disadvantages of risk of over rev on downshifts, a generally lower resale value, and is a pain in heavy traffic.
The tidbit below is not a comparison of EVO vs. TL, but a platform of comparison between cars

Asked and answered on other threads: some TL-S's do not have a 127mph rev limiter . Mine does not

And autos are almost always quicker especially as power levels go up. There's a larger gap than normal with the TL and imports in general because they tend to lack low end. In the V8 world the auto version of whatever we're comparing will usually get down the 1/4 just as quick or quicker. On the exterme end, say a large turbo, small V6, I would never think of running a manual. It's likely the car would be more than a second slower. In mine, you would have to pop the clutch and immediately grab second gear. It would be just about impossible to hit second in time and even then the turbo spools down and you have to build boost again.

For what its worth, I dyno'd my car last year with just an intake (AEM), and exhaust (comptech) and hit 228whp. A similar 6MT on the same dyno, same conditions, same mods, same night(Greddy exhaust,AEM intake+the pulley) dyno'd 238whp. However, I dyno'd 200wtq, and he hit 220 i believe...

SPAW: As IHC said, as power goes up, auto's are faster. We are talking about a TL 5AT here, not the DSG found in VWs or SMG, or any other dual clutch trannies. The TL auto is not a strong transmission, most Honda ATs for the V6s haven't been. If you prefer the 5AT more power to you.
The 6MT IS faster, just deal with it. Just because I'm a 6MT owner does not mean I'm cocky or anything of the sort. There is nothing wrong with the 5AT at all, nor the people who drive them. The 6 has better gearing, puts down more power, has LSD, and is lighter. It's just a fact. If you put Joe Schmo in the 6 speed, yea, you may have a different outcome. But with equal drivers the 6MT will win every time by a significant margin.

I'm beginning to think you have a small bat, and no M/T either
The article made no reference to Acura or any other non equal (entry level luxury sports sedan), just car to car.
If you have further comment, don't clutter the thread, send me a PM

It's simple the 6mt is faster in every way. Short of stalling there is no way a similar equipped AT TL is faster, when I tested our bone stock cars, I easily pulled away in 2nd, esp 3rd gear. I've driven both, and even a stock TL-S MT. Never drove the TL-S auto but imo I'm pretty sure an 04-06 MT is faster than an auto TL-S. I'm not much of a racer and don't really care which is faster but to me this is a trivially easy question.

IF you provided a reference that APPLIED to the TL concerning OUR gearboxes and not a DCT, then it would be different.
And the only person I see cluttering up the thread is YOU, SIR.

I (Road & Track) is simply providing a baseline comparison between an A/T paddle shift, and an M/T...not a hard line attitude that says M/T 's are always better. There are instances where they are not, but agreeably most of the time they are when it comes to raw performance.

You're right, and I wasn't making a comparison to any Honda/ Acura. I staed that in my post.

Except for endurance, what advantage would a dual clutch have?
I haven't driven a dual clutch box, but I have owned both the 6 M/T,
and the 5A/T TL-S, so I speak from experience (unlike others in this thread--not you). I don't see how the shifts could get much faster than what the 5 A/T already does?

im no tranny guru but this is what my thought is:
the conventional auto tranny (one in the TL) has a torque convertor which robs more power from the engine than the 6MT.
The dual clutch auto does not have a torque convertor so you dont see as much loss as a conventional auto tranny. also, since you have two clutchs (one for even numbered gears, one for odds) you get faster shifts than you can with a manual.
as you saw in the article, the dual clutch version of the cars performed faster. no driver can shift better/faster than a computer, especially a computer running a dual clutch. however, driving enjoyment goes down IMO.

SPAW its because you own a TYPE-S.
a BASE 6MT TL will have about the same power as a 5AT Type-S. your transmission negates the extra horsepower that the TYPE-S's come with.
you said you have experience , Southern boy has an 04 MT AND, I SAY AND a 05 AT. He notices that the MT is faster.
